Royal girls repeat as ISC champions

WAVERLY - The Colo-Nesco girls’ cross country team repeated as Iowa Star Conference champions by edging out GMG at the conference meet Oct. 13 on the Wartburg College course.

Colo-Nesco produced four of the top 10 runners, scoring 23 points to beat out GMG by eight points for its second ISC title in a row. Clarksville was a close third out of six scored teams with 36 points.

Alexis Britten, Faith Vincent, Angela Brinkman and Grace Stalzer all placed in the top 10 to help the Royals bring home another title.

Britten ran a 5-kilometer time of 21 minutes, 37 seconds to place fourth overall. GMG’s Kyla Wilkening easily won the girls’ individual title in 19:35, Clarksville’s Kori Wedeking ran a 20:33 to take second and Tripoli’s Bethan Abben came in just ahead of Britten with a time of 21:34.

Vincent and Brinkman were neck-and-neck right behind Britten. Vincent took fifth in 21:44 and Brinkman was the sixth runner to cross the finish line after running a 21:45.

Stalzer took eighth at the meet. She completed the course in 21:54.

Lauryn Hill was the final scored Colo-Nesco runner. Her time of 24:00 was good enough for 17th place.

Shelby Smith was just outside the scoring pack for Colo-Nesco. Smith took 18th in 24:03.

Hailey Anthony placed 25th as the final varsity runner to cross the finish line for Colo-Nesco. Anthony finished the race in 24:37.

In the boys’ race, Colo-Nesco turned in a solid fourth-place showing out of eight teams. The Royals scored 73 points to finish behind Dunkerton (23 points), Don Bosco (50) and GMG (56) and ahead of Tripoli (90), Riceville (108), Valley Lutheran (111) and Clarksville (113).

Caleb Cobbs was outstanding as an all-conference runner for the Royal boys. In his second meet back from an injury, Cobbs ran a 5-kilometer time of 17:35 to place third overall behind the 16:53 run by Don Bosco’s Zach Nie and 17:14 by Dunkerton’s Jordan Yessak.

Cole Dulaney also had a good day for Colo-Nesco. He completed the course in 18:56 to place 11th.

Caleb Vaughn, Sean Gilbert and Ashton Graddick were the other runners to earn points for the Colo-Nesco boys. Vaughn took 28th in 21:30, Gilbert 34th in 22:31 and Graddick 36th in 22:56.

Scott Miller and Christian Norris also ran varsity for the Royal boys. Miller took 40th in 24:55 and Norris came in 42nd at 26:12.
