Here are the 21 top Ames-area high school sports performers for May 30-June 5

The Gilbert boys and Nevada girls soccer teams both reached the semifinals at the boys and girls state soccer tournaments last week at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

The Gilbert boys defeated Marion by a 1-0 score in overtime in the Class 2A quarterfinals then suffered a 2-1 loss in PKs to Pella in the semifinals to finish at 17-3. The Nevada girls took down Bishop Heelan by a 1-0 score in the quarterfinals and fell to Davenport Assumption by PKs in the semifinals, 2-1, to end their season at 13-7.

The Nevada boys soccer team also competed at state. The Cubs suffered a 3-2 loss to West Liberty in two overtimes during the 1A quarterfinals to end their season at 15-7.

In baseball action Ames split a doubleheader with Mason City and swept Des Moines Lincoln and Marshalltown. Roland-Story picked up two Heart of Iowa Conference victories, went 3-2 during the week, Ballard split four games, Nevada went 3-1, Collins-Maxwell went 2-2 and Colo-NESCO finished 2-1.

During softball competition Ames was a perfect 6-0, Collins-Maxwell 4-0, Nevada 4-1, Roland-Story 3-1, Gilbert 3-2, Colo-NESCO 2-3 and Ballard 1-4. 

Here are the top Ames Tribune-area individual performers for the week:

Alex Ruba scored the winning goal for Gilbert in a 1-0 overtime win over Marion in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the boys state soccer tournament June 1 in Des Moines.

Ruba scored the winning goal in overtime for Gilbert during a 1-0 Tiger victory over Marion in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the boys state soccer tournament June 1 in Des Moines.

Ruba converted a header off a ball from Evan Weary for the winning score. He was also part of a great Tiger defensive effort against Marion and in a 2-1 shootout loss to Pella in the semifinals.

Ireland Buss

Buss hit two home runs for the Ames softball team in an 8-5 win over Clarke and hit a solo shot in a 9-1 victory over North Polk Friday at Alleman.

Buss also tripled and drove in two runs during a doubleheader sweep of Mason City and drove in three runs during a sweep of Marshalltown.

Alexa Kopaska

Kopaska fired three perfect innings with seven strikeouts for the Ames softball team in a 14-0 win against Marshalltown and she gave up just one hit with six strikeouts in three innings to get the victory in an 11-0 victory over the Bobcats May 31.

Kopaska also got the win in an 8-7 victory over Mason City and the victory over North Polk and she threw two shutout innings with three strikeouts against Clarke.

Carter Geffre

Geffre was 6-for-7 with two doubles and five RBIs for the Ames baseball team in its sweep over Marshalltown (16-5 and 15-3) May 31 at Marshalltown.

Geffre also homered, scored four times and drove in two runs in a 13-4 win over Lincoln and was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Mason City.

Mario Napolitano

Napolitano was 6-for-15 during the week for the Ames baseball team.

Napolitano hit three doubles and he scored five runs and drove in four. Napolitano also got the win on the mound in a 16-2 victory during the doubleheader with Lincoln. He went all five innings and gave up two runs with five strikeouts.

Tessa Borwick scored Nevada's lone goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to Davenport Assumption in the 1A semifinals of the girls state soccer tournament. Borwick was named to the 1A all-tournament team.

Borwick scored a goal late in regulation to force overtime for Nevada against Davenport Assumption during the Class 1A semifinals of the girls state soccer tournament June 2 in Des Moines.

Borwick also converted a PK in the shootout. She was named to the 1A all-tournament team.

Erica Houge

Houge hit for the cycle with four RBIs and also tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for the No. 5 (1A) Collins-Maxwell softball team in a 7-0 victory over GMG June 1 at Collins.

Houge also threw three perfect innings with seven strikeouts and she also drove in two runs in a 17-0 victory over North Tama May 31. She struck out 10 batters in a 5-3 victory over Hampton-Dumont-CAL June 2 and was 3-for-4 with a triple, homer and seven RBIs plus 12 strikeouts on the mound in an 11-1 victory over Baxter Friday.

Alexis Houge

Houge was 7-for-13 with nine runs and three steals during the week for the Collins-Maxwell softball team.

Houge also hit a solo home run and drove in five runs.

Weston Kahler

Kahler struck out 13 batters and fired a three-hitter during a 12-2 victory by the Collins-Maxwell baseball team over Baxter in six innings Friday at Collins.

Kahler was also 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and an RBI in a 10-3 Spartan win over GMG June 1.

Drew Robinson scored one goal during Nevada's 3-2 double-overtime loss to West Liberty in the 1A quarterfinals of the boys state soccer tournament June 1 in Des Moines.

Robinson scored a goal off a penalty kick to force overtime during Nevada's 1A quarterfinal game against West Liberty at the boys state soccer tournament June 1 in Des Moines.

Nevada ended up losing the game in double overtime, 3-2.

Peyton Hanson

Hanson had a big week for the Nevada softball team.

In games with Iowa Falls-Alden, West Marshall, South Hamilton and BGM Hanson was 9-for-14 with five doubles, one home run and 14 RBIs.

Gavin Melohn

Melohn had a productive week for the Nevada baseball team.

Melohn helped Nevada down Iowa Falls-Alden (13-9), Vinton-Shellsburg (4-1) and South Hamilton 11-5. He went 4-for-7 with a triple, six runs and seven steals during the three victories.

Weary assisted on Ruba's winning goal during Gilbert's 1-0 victory over Marion in the 2A quarterfinals of the boys state soccer tournament.

Weary also played tremendous defense and constantly set up good balls for his teammates off corner and free kicks.

Trevor Jensen

Jensen fired a one-hit shutout for the Gilbert baseball team in a 7-0 victory over Pella May 31 at Pella.

Jensen struck out seven batters and walked four during the victory.

Carlee Schwartze

Schwartze helped the Gilbert softball team pull off victories over Boone (13-12), Alburnett (9-3) and Newman Catholic (6-2).

The eighth-grade center fielder was 5-for-11 with two doubles, six runs and eight RBIs for the Tigers over the three victories.

Madison Geise

Geise went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Roland-Story softball team in a 9-2 victory over Perry and she was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in a 5-2 victory over Greene County.

Geise also tossed a three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over West Marshall. She added 11 strikeouts in the win over Greene County.

Brett Schmitz

Schmitz was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Roland-Story baseball team in an 8-3 victory over PCM May 31.

Schmitz also was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in a 5-4 victory over Perry June 1.

Maddie Dunham made 19 saves plus one save in the shootout for Nevada in its 2-1 loss to Davenport Assumptin during the 1A semifinals of the girls state soccer tournament June 2.

Dunham made 19 saves and added another one in the shootout for Nevada in its 1-0 loss to Davenport Assumption in the 1A semifinals of the girls state soccer tournament June 2 in Des Moines.

Dunham also helped Nevada record a shutout in a 1-0 victory over Bishop Heelan during the quarterfinals. She was named to the 1A all-tournament team.

Spencer Hansen

Hansen was 2-for-5 with three runs and RBI for the Colo-NESCO baseball team in a 14-12 victory at West Central Valley Saturday.

Hansen also doubled and drove in a run in a 4-2 victory over GMG Friday at Zearing.

Bryce Haessig

Haessig fired a two-hitter on the mound for the Ballard baseball team in a 7-1 Raccoon River Conference victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn June 2 at Slater.

Haessig struck out 11 batters and only walked one going the full seven innings.

Maggie Mortensen

Mortensen hit a solo home run to help the Ballard softball team defeat Indianola, 3-1, May 31 at Huxley.

Mortensen also went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run in an 8-6 loss to Center Point-Urbana June 1.
