NEVADA — For the 10th season in a row, Nevada will be a part of the girls state soccer tournament.

Nevada punched its ticket to the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines Thursday with an impressive 4-0 victory over Pella Christian in the Class 1A regional final at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

"It's really exciting to be back, especially with a new group," Nevada forward Mayzi Weig said. "A lot of our team are freshmen. It's exciting for them."

The Cubs (12-6) are taking a four-game winning streak into state.

The season hasn't always a smooth ride — the Cubs were 4-4 at one point, going up against a tough slate that included several ranked Class 2A teams. But they've really started to click during the most important stretch of the season, outscoring their three regional foes by a combined margin of 17-0.

"We're coming along at the right time," Nevada head coach Randy Davis said. "I know the competition continues to get tougher, but we're playing as well as we can. Hopefully we can pull something together at state."

Nevada girls soccer team celebrates after defeating Pella Christian, 4-0, in the Class 1A regiona final at Cub Stadium in Nevad Thursday, May 26, 2022, in Nevada, Iowa. The victory sent the Cubs to the state tournament for the 10th season in a row.

Nevada dominated possession for nearly the entire game against Pella Christian May 26. It took a few minutes for the Cubs to break through against a tough Eagle defense and some outstanding saves by Pella Christian keeper Lydia Zylstra, but they got hot in the second half and were off and running.

Sophomore midfielder Isabelle Nelson was the one to ignite Nevada.

Nelson scored the game's first goal on a shot from 15 yards out at the 22-minute, 28-second mark. The Cubs maintained a 1-0 lead at the half, but it took them less than six minutes to break through in the second half as Weig scored off a great ball from Nelson.

"She was psyching all those people out on the sides," Nevada midfielder Tessa Borwick siad. "She'd get around them, then crossed them over to Mayzi and all of our forwards."

Nelson burned the Eagles with a fantastic pull-back move to set up her and Weig's goals.

"I was just taking a touch like coach tells us to," Nelson said. "We work on it in practice and the coaches are awesome."

Then it was the big leg of Borwick that slammed the door on Pella Christian.
