Ames Tribune area top high school sports performers for week of April 11-17
Last week saw the Ames girls track team win the Hi-Covey Relays, the Gilbert boys and girls' golf teams continue to roll and the Little Cyclones' Corey Phillips keep up his outstanding performance in the boys' discus.
The Ames girls' golf team also won two meets and Ballard's Paityn Noe dominated in distance events in girls' track.
The Ames girls scored 175 points and had great performances across the board in beating Ankeny by 18 points at the home meet. Phillips stood out in the boys meet with a victory in the discus.
The Gilbert boys' golf team won at Terrace Hills and the girls at Briarwood April 11. On Friday both teams were victorious on their home course at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
The Ames girls' golf team edged Urbandale on the Jayhawks' home cours April 11 and crushed Des Moines Hoover and Roosevelt in a triangular April 12 at the Grand View Golf Club.
Noe dominated the 1,500 and 3,000-meter running events at the Carroll Invitational April 11.
Here are the top Ames Tribune area individual performers for the week:
Moon won the open 100 and helped the Ames girls to victories in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays at the Hi-Covey relays. Moon clocked in at 12.55 seconds.
The Ames girls 4x200 relay team won in 1:44.03 and the 4x400 in 4:05.21.
Phillips won the boys discus at the Hi-Covey Relays.
Phillips outclassed the rest of the field with ease. His winning throw was 174 feet, 8 inches. He beat Iowa City High's Tae Shon McDaniels by 25 feet, 9 inches for the victory.
The Ames junior anchored the Little Cyclone girls to win the sprint medley relay and won the 100 and 400 hurdles individually at the Hi-Covey Relays.
Frandsen helped the Ames sprint medley team run a time of 1:49.49. She also won the 100 hurdles in 15.05 and 400 hurdles in 1:06.31.
Clatt won medalist for the Gilbert boys golf team at both the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational April 11 at the Terrace Hills course and the Gilbert co-ed quadrangular meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club Friday.
Clatt shot a 74 over 18 holes to beat teammate Joey Currans by 1 stroke for first at the B-F Invite. He carded a 35 over nine holes at the Gilbert co-ed meet to beat teammate Brock Snyder by 2 strokes for medalist honors.
The Gilbert boys shot a 306 at Terrace Hills to beat North Polk by 22 strokes first and a 149 on Friday to top the Comets by 23 strokes for the win.
The Ames senior won medalist in a triangular dual meet with Des Moines Hoover and Des Moines East at the Grand View Golf Club April 12 and placed fifth at the Urbandale Invitational April 11 in girls' golf.
Bearson shot a 45 at Urbandale over nine holes to finish three strokes out of first place. She won the triangular wih Roosevelt and East after carding a 42 over nine holes to win the meet by two strokes.
Duncan won medalist at the Urbandale Invitational for the Ames girls after carding a 42. The freshman placed third at the Hoover/East triangular with a 45, coming in three strokes behind Bearson's winning score.
The freshman led the Ballard boys golf team to a 177-198 dual victory over Boone in nine holes at the Ballard Golf and Country Club in Huxley April 12.
Gachel won medalist by five strokes after shooting a 40.
Lohrbach continued the hot start to her sophomore season as the defending 3A individual state champion in girls golf by winning medalist in three meets last week.
Lohrbach took first at the Briarwood Invitational April 11, a dual meet with Van Meter at the Ames Golf and Country Club April 12 and a triangular with Nevada and North Polk Friday in Ames. She shot a 76 over 18 holes at Briarwood to win by four strokes, a 37 in nine holes at the Van Meter dual to win by six strokes and 36 in nine holes Friday to win by six strokes.
Hawthorne anchored the Gilbert girls track team to a win in the sprint medley relay at the Cardinal Relays in Earlham April 12 with a time of 1:56.87. She also helped Gilbert place third in the 4x400 with a time of 4:25.49.
Witt won the boys open 400 for Ballard at the Carroll Co-Ed Relays April 11.
Witt crossed the finish line in 52.68 to just edge the 52.80 by East Sac County's Tyler Schmitt. He also helped Ballard place second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:43.69
Staudt won the girls shot put and took second in the discus for Collins-Maxwell at the Cardinal Relays in Earlham.
Staud's winning throw in the shot put was 31-8. She threw 91-5 in the discus to trail only the 102-1 by Panorama's Jazmyn Sellers.
Noe won both the girls 1,500 and 3,000 in impressive fashion for Ballard at Carroll.
Noe ran the 1,500 in 4:47.84 and the 3,000 in 9:58.74. Noe currently has the fastest 3,000 time in the state and ranks second in the 1,500.
Noe also anchored Ballard to a win in the girls' distance medley with a time of 4:33.89.
Sporleder helped the Roland-Story girls win the sprint medley relay and she also placed second in the long jump at Carroll.
The Norse sprint medley team clocked in at 1:54.16 to just hold off Audubon's runner-up time of 1:54.90. Sporleder jumped 16-4 in the long jump to finish just one inch behind Greene County's Olivia Shannon's winning jump.
Geise won the girls discus at Carroll for Roland-Story.
Geise peaked with a throw of 123-11 to win the event by 11-6 over Carroll's Vanessa Ayala.
Andreotti led the Ames girls soccer team to its first victory of the season April 14 at North Polk.
Andreotti scored both Little Cyclone goals in a 2-1 victory.
Sponseller picked up a hat-trick for the Nevada boys soccer team in a 5-0 victory over Prairie City-Monroe April 12 in Nevada.
Sponseller scored three goals in the victory.
Lynch scored both goals for the Gilbert girls soccer team in a 3-2 loss to Ade-Desoto-Minburn April 11 at Gilbert.
Lynch showed her versatility as an athlete last week by also earning medalist runner-up honors for the Tiger girls golf team at their home triangular Friday with a 42 over nine holes.
The Nevada senior won the open 100 and 200 races at the Norwalk Co-Ed Invitational April 11. DaSilva completed the 100 in 11.44 seconds and the 200 in 22.42.
DaSilva also anchored Nevada to victory in the boys' 4x200 relay with a time of 1:33.01.
Cutler won the boys' 400 hurdles in 58.07 seconds for the Colo-NESCO boys track team at the Bolt Co-Ed Invitational in Baxter April 11.
Cutler also helped the Royals place second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:41.24.
Chen scored singles and doubles victories for the Ames girls tennis team in 9-2 victory over Waukee Northwest April 11 in Ames. She also picked up a doubles win to cap a 3-0 week in an 11-0 shutout of Des Moines East April 12 at Des Moines.
Chen defeated Waukee Northwest's Saanvi Nallu in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, during the No. 3 singles match against the Wolves. She teamed with Lola Campbell to win the No.2 doubles match over the Wolves' Saanvi Nallu and Davis Schmidt by 6-0 and 6-4 scores.
Chen joined up with Katie Gu to win the No. 1 doubles match against East. Chen and Gu defeated Tabitha Hochmuth and Shanee Saidu with a pair of 6-0 shutouts.
