Bombers blast Comets in opener, 27-7: Ballard holds NP under 200 yards
ALLEMAN - Ballard used a dominant defensive effort to overpower old rival North Polk, 27-7, during the opening week of high school football Friday.
The Bombers got the season off on the right foot by limiting North Polk to 181 yards and forcing three turnovers. The Comets didn’t score until there were less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter and the outcome had long been decided.
“Our guys focused this week on getting better and had a great week of practice,” Ballard co-head coach Corey Vespestad said. “I’m Proud of how we played as a team.”
Ballard led 13-0 at the half. Connor Drew threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Haessig just over two minutes into the second quarter and four minutes later Sam Petersen ran one in from 11 yards out.
Petersen added a 3-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to give Ballard firm control. Drew iced the game with a 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Drew completed 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and he also led Ballard in rushing with 60 yards on 11 attempts. Petersen ran for 38 yards, Mason Murphy had 41 yards receiving and 21 rushing, Jacob Ihle caught one ball for 20 yards, Kyler Watson made a 14-yard reception and Wil Jennings ran for 18 yards.
Petersen led Ballard’s awesome defensive effort with nine tackles and one interception. Jeremiah Wilkinson made 6.5 stops, Austin Nelson and Logan Harmeyer 5.5 apiece and Carter Foddrill-Bryan five.
Owen Harms recorded a sack and Nick Wacha and Trevor Kalsem each recovered a fumble for the Bombers.
Bryce Aspergren threw for 90 yards and ran for 24 and Jacob Bloomquist added 54 yards and one touchdown rushing for North Polk in a losing effort. Carson Brimner made four catches for 42 yards, Sal Capaldo had three grabs for 33, Cale Engebreston totaled 5.5 tackles and Nick Cox and Joe Taylor each recovered a fumble for the Cubs.
Ballard’s next game is its home opener against Carlisle (1-0).
“We have another tough game ahead of us with Carlisle,” Vespestad said. “They are well coached and are a very physical team.”
The Bombers and Wildcats will kick off at 7 p.m. at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
