JEWELL — Roland-Story had trouble moving the ball and stopping South Hamilton’s potent rushing attack in a 42-8 loss to the Hawks during the opening week of high school football Friday.

Roland-Story only had 169 yards of total offense. The Norsemen also gave up 429 yards on the ground.

“We knew we were going to have our hands full with a very solid South Hamilton team returning a bunch of good players,” Roland-Story head coach Matt Finn said. “Against schemes like theirs especially, you’ve got to minimize mistakes and keep moving the chains and we didn’t quite get either done. Gotta give a lot of credit to Coach (Corey) Klemp and his staff for having his guys ready to play.”

The Norsemen did manage to hang around through the middle of the third quarter.

Roland-Story trailed 18-2 at the half after Jimmy Philipsen recorded a safety early in the second quarter. A 9-yard Luke Patton touchdown run kept Roland-Story within 26-8 with 4:53 left in the third.

South Hamilton’s Brock Galetich broke free on a 51-yard scoring scamper just before the end of the third quarter and Lane Swenson added another touchdown run for the Hawks early in the fourth to wrap up the game.

Roland-Story's Will Bunn tries to get past a South Hamilton defender during the Norsemen's season opener Friday in Jewell.

“We’re going to learn from our mistakes and keep getting better,” Finn said. “This isn’t about one play or one player, it’s about an approach. We have to make sure everyone understands their assignments with great clarity and then executes with the fundamentals we practice. We have to get everyone on board with doing the little things and finishing plays. We’ll get there. I think we’ll take a big step this week.”

Patton threw for 103 yards and ran for 48. Carter Flattebo had five catches for 41 yards, Adam McIlrath two for 34, Will bunn three for 18 and Kaleb Brendeland one for 10.

Zach Twedt added 17 yards rushing and he also made 7.5 tackles on defense. McIlrath led Roland-Story in tackles with 10.5, Quin Ante added 8.5, David Downs made eight, Philipsen five and Caden Sporleder tacked on one tackle for loss.

Trevor Thompson ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns and Galetich 147 yards and two scores to lead South Hamilton.

Roland-Story faces a big test next week against Nevada (1-0). The Cubs won their opener over Adel-Desoto-Minburn, 41-21.

The game will be Roland-Story’s home opener. It takes place at 7 p.m. this Friday in Story City.
