The Nevada softball team had five all-Heart of Iowa Conference selections after placing third in the conference in 2018.

Senior shortstop Grace Francis, senior pitcher Mackenzie Garrett, freshman catcher Katie Sullivan, junior first baseman Emma Griffin and freshman outfielder Sydney Mosinski were named all-HOIC from Nevada. They helped the Cubs go 7-7 in the HOIC to trail only eventual Class 3A state runner-up Roland-Story and a North Polk team that placed fifth in the final 3A regular season final standings.

Francis was honored as a first-team selection after turning in a banner senior season. Francis hit .389 with seven doubles, one home run, six runs and five RBIs in conference games.

The other players named to the first team were: Roland-Story’s Riley Holmgren, Hailey Louw, Madison Friest, Susie Weaver, Jenna Clark and Sydney Mathis; North Polk’s Hannah Pals, Ellie Owen, Rebecca Ley and Sophie Swygman and Saydel’s Alle Thompson and Alexis Carney.

Garrett and Sullivan were named to the all-HOIC second team, alongside North Polk’s Bailey Hougham, Tricia Sporra, Sydney Albaugh and Sydney Anderson; Gilbert’s Riley Nelson and Nessa Johnson; Greene County’s Jenna Beyers, Megan Carey and Samantha Hardaway; South Hamilton’s Marla Grubb and Breanne Diersen and Prairie City-Monroe’s Regan Freland.

Sullivan hit .400 in conference play with three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs. She also played tough defense behind the plate.

Garrett went 4-1 with a 2.93 earned-run average, 12 strikeouts and just seven walks in 40 ⅔ innings on the mound against HOIC teams. On offense, she doubled twice and drove in five runs.

Griffin and Mosinski were both named honorable mention.

Griffin hit .283 with three doubles, one home run and eight RBIs. Mosinski posted a .415 batting average in conference play with two doubles, one home run, 10 runs and six RBIs.
