Cubs put 11 on all-3A District 6 football teams

The Nevada football team had 11 players receive all-Class 3A District 6 recognition in 2016.

The Cubs put one player on the first-team defense and five on the second-team offense. They also had five players named honorable mention after picking up two wins in district play.

Junior Trent Stahl was the Cub picked to the first-team defense. Stahl was chosen at defensive back after recording 41.5 tackles and two interceptions on the season.

Senior Matt Fortmann and junior Luke Merfeld were picked as offensive linemen on the second-team offense. The duo led a Cub line that helped Nevada average 306.6 yards a game, competing in one of the toughest districts in the state.

Cub junior Matt Chitty was a second-team choice at tight end. Chitty caught eight passes for 134 yards on the season.

Senior A.J. Strottman and junior Om’Unique Wilkerson were the other Cubs to make the second team.

Strottman ran for 491 yards and two touchdowns and he also caught 17 passes for 265 yards and one score. Wilkerson made 18 receptions for 341 yards and two touchdowns and he also ran for 80 yards during the season.

Seniors Macade Matuska and Zac Sharp and juniors Preston Cattanach, Jack Higgins and Bronzon Mason were the Nevada players named honorable mention.

Matuska threw for 1,195 yards and seven touchdowns and added 220 yards and three touchdowns rushing on the season at quarterback. Sharp put up 24 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions on the defensive line.

Cattanach had 27 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery and Higgins produced 39.5 tackles and one fumble recovery. Mason compiled 14.5 tackles and three sacks.
