Cub girls place in two relays at state
DES MOINES - The Nevada girls’ track team won two relay medals and the Cub boys set three personal records in Class 3A at the state coed track meet last Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Cub girls got to give seniors Lindsey Haley and Alli Fey a big send-off by placing sixth in the 3A girls’ 4 X 100-meter relay on Saturday. They also took eighth in the 4 X 200 on Friday and came up one spot shy of placing in the sprint medley relay Saturday morning with a ninth-place performance.
On Friday the Nevada 4 X 100 team of juniors Jordan McKinney and Abby Stephenson and Fey and Haley took eighth in the 3A prelims to advance to the finals with a personal-record time of 50.67 seconds - falling just .39 seconds shy of the school record.
“Obviously knowing it was the seniors’ last race I think we all knew going into it that was going to be an important one and that we all give it our best,” Fey said.
Nevada did just that the following day. The Cub quartet nearly matched their time with a :50.81 and they were able to move up two spots in the final standings.
“Coming in eighth - we were supposed to be the slowest ones - getting sixth is pretty amazing for us,” Haley said. “Running with these girls is the most amazing thing I’ve ever done in high school.”
Earlier on Saturday, the same foursome ran a personal-record 1:51.38 in the sprint medley. The Cubs finished one-tenth of a second shy of placing in the event and they were just .31 away from the school record.
On Friday Stephenson, Fey and Haley were joined by freshman Caitlyn Sharp to place eighth in the 4 X 200. They finished the race in a personal-record time of 1:47.11.
“This group of girls - besides freshman Caitlyn Sharp - have considered Drake Stadium their new home this season - they have been there for the Drake Relays the past two seasons and have been at the state meet the last three years,” Nevada head girls’ track coach Ted Johnson said. “Caitlyn was a nice addition this year to the 4 X 200 and I’m excited for what she will do in the next three years. Jordan has only become stronger throughout the year and is explosive out of the blocks. Abby came back from a stress fracture in her foot and has only become stronger because of it. As far as my two seniors that qualified; Alli and Lindsey will be missed. They are best friends and share a chemistry on the track that is hard to find.”
Haley also ran in the 3A girls’ 100 prelims on Thursday. She took 19th in :13.36.
On the boys’ side Nevada wasn’t able to place in any event, but the Cubs did set three personal records.
“We had two great days at the state meet,” Nevada head boys’ track coach John Pelzer said. “I wish it could have been extended to three, but that wasn’t in the cards.”
Nevada’s Brendan Sellberg, Lane Hillock, Erik Fevold and Peyton Sharp ran in the 3A boys’ 4 X 200 finals and 4 X 100 prelims on Friday. The Cub team placed 11th in the 4 X 200 with a time of 1:31.50 and 12th in the 4 X 100 prelims with a :43.96 showing - both personal best times.
Sharp also placed 17th in the 100 dash prelims on Thursday with an :11.57 showing and 19th in the 400 low hurdles on Friday after clocking in at :56.62.
“I’d like to note that Erik ran in the Drake Relays three times and at the state meet four times while overcoming two complete ACL repairs, and Peyton ran at Drake four times and at state four times,” Pelzer said. “I’m lucky to have coached both of them and I could not be prouder of them and this year’s qualifiers and alternates.”
Malachi Hornbuckle ran in the 3A boys’ 3,200 on Thursday and Stephen Dolley participated in the 3A boys’ shot put on Friday. Hornbuckle ran a season-best time of 10:15.21 to place 15th and Dolley came in 18th with a throw of 45-4.75.
Davenport Assumption won the 3A girls’ team championship with 126 points and Pella came in second with 79.5. Pella took the 3A boys’ title with 62 points and Vinton-Shellsburg was runner-up with a score of 56.
