Cub boys win substate opener over Humboldt

NEVADA - The Nevada boys’ soccer team picked up a Class 1A substate quarterfinal victory Monday with a 1-0 triumph over Humboldt at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.

Nevada earned its first postseason victory since 2013 and improved to 8-11 on the season. Rodrigo Perez scored Nevada’s only goal off an assist from Brendan Sellberg.

The Cubs ended up with 10 shots on goal. Perez, Sellberg, Emilio Saldana and Devin See had two apiece, and Anthony Ellis and Bennett Thompson each ended up with one.

A.J. Strottman only needed to make two saves at keeper as a dominant defensive performance resulted in the Cubs’ sixth shutout win of the year.

NEVADA - Nevada wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 home loss to Newton Friday at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.

The Cubs got off seven shots on goal in a losing effort as they fell to 7-11 on the season. Anthony Ellis, Salvador Garcia and Andrew Saunders fired off two shots apiece, and Rodrigo Perez got off one for Nevada.

Cub keeper A.J. Strottman made eight saves. Newton keeper Griffin Engel ended up with four saves.

Duncan Lee and Josh Ventling each netted one goal for Newton. Nick Rusk chipped in an assist for the Cardinals.

BONDURANT - Nevada came up just short of getting a road win over Bondurant-Farrar May 16 as the Cubs were dealt a 3-2 loss by the Bluejays at Bondurant.

Nevada was outshot, 13-6, but the Cubs hung tough, pushing the Bluejays to the limit. The Cubs gave up one penalty kick goal and that turned out to be the difference.

Rodrigo Perez and Bennett Thompson each scored once and Devin See handed out an assist for Nevada. Dennis Garcia fired off two shots on goal and Perez, Devin See, Brendan Sellberg and Thompson finished with one apiece.

A.J. Strottman tallied 10 saves at keeper for Nevada in the loss.

Matt Eckert, Ricky Onofre and Carlos Sanchez each scored one goal for Bondurant-Farrar. Onofre also handed out one assist.
