Royal boys place second at qualifying meet
BELLE PLAINE — The Colo-Nesco boys’ track team qualified for state in six events and the Royal girls made it in one at the Class 1A state qualifying meet in Belle Plaine May 12.
The Colo-Nesco boys won four events, placing second in the team standings at Belle Plaine with 106.5 points. Lynnville-Sully won the team championship with 137.5 points.
Christian Reischauer qualified for state in two events, and Caleb Cobbs and Brady Stoeffler made it in one apiece for the Royals.
Reischauer is headed to Des Moines in the long jump and 400-meter low hurdles. He won both events at Belle Plaine.
In the long jump Reischauer peaked with an outstanding jump of 21 feet, 11 inches to easily top the runner-up jump of 20-11.25 by Grand View Christian’s Graham Geist. Reischauer’s jump ranks second among 1A qualifiers behind the 22-1 by Lone Tree’s Jovonte Squiers.
Reischauer completed the 400 lows in 57.20 seconds to just beat out the :57.41 run by HLV’s Wyatt Kaplan for first at Belle Plaine. Reischauer’s time ranks 10th overall among 1A qualifiers.
Cobbs won the 3,200 at Belle Plaine in 10:56.99. He ranks 23rd among 1A qualifiers.
Stoeffer is moving on to state in the 800 after taking second at Belle Plaine with a 2:06.18 showing. He enters state as the 20th-ranked 1A qualifier in the event.
Stoeffler was also part of two qualifying relay events. Reischauer and Cobbs each ran in one of those races.
In the shuttle hurdle relay Stoeffler and Reischauer were joined by Caleb Vaughn and Grant Tiarks in running a 1:01.31 to place second at the qualifying meet. The Royal team is rated ninth among 1A qualifiers.
Stoeffler and Cobbs teamed with Garret Tiarks and Steven Cutler to make state in the 4 X 800. The Royal team is rated eighth out of the 1A qualifying field after winning at Belle Plaine with a time of 8:36.34.
Cutler just missed making state in the 1,600 after running a 4:54.39 to place second at Belle Plaine. Only the winner of each event automatically qualifies in 1A and Cutler’s time was 3.19 seconds off the final at-large qualifying time.
The Royal girls made state in one event. They finished seventh out of 12 teams in the girls’ standings with 59 points.
Angela Brinkman, Grace Stalzer, Faith Vincent and Hallie Riese teamed to make state for Colo-Nesco in the shuttle hurdle relay. The Royal team ran a 1:12.70 to place second to the 1:07.54 run by Belle Plaine and they rank 20th among 1A qualifiers.
Riese turned in a third-place run of :17.72 in the 100 hurdles individually for Colo-Nesco. She also joined up with Chelsea Henze, Vincent and Rylie Reischauer to place third in the 4 X 200 with a time of 1:56.83.
Brinkman took fourth at Belle Plaine in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:13.02. The final at-large qualifying time in the event was 1:12.16 by Central Decatur’s Emma Atwood.
Brinkman also took fourth behind Riese in the 100 hurdles with a time of :18.44.
Alexis Britten came in fourth at the qualifying meet in the 3,000 for Colo-Nesco with a time of 12:42.60. Reischauer was fifth in the 100 with a :14.22 showing.
Riese, Reischauer, Henze and Vincent placed fifth in the sprint medley with a 2:04.60 showing. Hannah Reischauer came in fifth in the discus with a throw of 88-9.5.
Belle Plaine won the girls’ team title with 116 points. Colfax-Mingo took second with a score of 103.
The 2016 state coed track meet will take place this Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The competition begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday for 1A and all classes start at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
