Nevada boys lose 3-2 battle at Gilbert

GILBERT — It took Nevada just a little too long to make adjustments in a 3-2 loss to Gilbert during a Heart of Iowa Conference boys’ soccer rivalry game Friday in Gilbert.

Nevada found itself down 3-1 following a goal by Gilbert’s Matthew Gannon early in the second half.

With a strong wind to its back in the second half, Nevada gradually adjusted to Gilbert’s fast turf field and began to take advantage of the favorable weather.

During the 61-minute, eight-second mark of the game, Anthony Ellis followed up a deflection to put the ball in the net and pull Nevada within 3-2.

The Cubs continued to dominate possession the rest of the way. That led to some golden opportunities, but they weren’t able to capitalize.

“It took us a little bit of time in the second half to get used to the wind and obviously the playing surface is a little bit different than playing on grass,” Nevada co-head coach Todd Sampson said. “We got it it figured out and had some opportunities - we just couldn’t get one more in.”

The best shot Nevada had at tying the game came during the 67th minute. A ball got by the Gilbert keeper as Emilio Saldana was chasing it down for Nevada, but the ball went wide left of the goal and made it out of bounds before Saldana could get to it.

Eight minutes later another ball got by the Tiger keeper. But Gilbert was able to kick it out of bounds before any Nevada player could get to the ball.

In the final minute of play, Bennett Thompson got a direct kickoff that made its way toward the goal, but the ball was snared by the keeper to preserve the victory for Gilbert.

“We had the opportunities tonight,” Sampson said. “We just couldn’t get that one person at the right spot at the right time.”

The loss put Nevada at 7-9 on the season and Gilbert improved to 6-7. The two teams could meet again in Class 1A substate play.

“The way it’s sitting there’s a chance we see them again,” Sampson said. “I think it will be another great game.”

Adam Baker and Andrew Thatcher each scored for Gilbert in the first half. Brendan Sellberg found the back of the net for Nevada’s first goal just over 11 minutes into the game.
