Cub boys place third at sectional meet

POLK CITY — The Nevada boys’ golf team came up one spot shy of qualifying for districts after placing third at the Class 3A sectional meet at the Tournament Club of Iowa May 12 in Polk City.

The Cubs shot a 491 over 18 holes to lead Boone by 12 strokes for third. Webster City beat out Nevada for the final district-qualifying spot with a score of 473, and Gilbert won the team championship with a 460.

“We knew going into this sectional that it was a buzz saw,” Nevada head coach Ryan Brown said. “Gilbert and Webster City have been ranked Nos. 1 and 2 all year and for good reason. I thought that if we put it all together today and then caught one of the teams on an off day, we would have a chance. The guys played well, but what Webster City and Gilbert did is phenomenal.”

Braydon Otto and Dylan Sporrer stepped up with very strong outings for Nevada at the sectional meet. Both Cub golfers shot a 77 to tie for eighth place individually.

Otto had a 41 on the front nine, then shaved five strokes off that score down the backstretch. Sporrer was consistent with rounds of 39 and 38.

Cameron Shill and Jake DeVries turned in the other counted scores for Nevada. Shill shot an 81 with rounds of 40 and 41 and DeVries turned in rounds of 39 and 43 to card an 82.

Cole Gidel and Preston Shill also competed for Nevada at the meet. Gidel shot an 84 and Preston delivered a 90.

“We had a great season and continued to build on our programs and compete,” Brown said. “The seniors (Braydon, Jake and Cole) have been invaluable assets to our team the last four years. I am thankful for the opportunity to coach them.”

Gilbert’s Garret Jensen shot an incredible four-under par score of 67 to win medalist at the meet. Webster City’s Alec Fuhs was runner-up with a 72.

Final team scores (18 holes): 1. Gilbert 460, 2. Webster City 473, 3. Nevada 491, 4. Boone 503, 5. Ballard 511, 6. Humboldt 567 7. North Polk 595, 8. Iowa Falls-Alden 609.
