Cub boys place fourth at HOIC meet

GILBERT — The Nevada boys’ track team produced six top-two finishes and the Cub girls won two relays at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet May 3 at Gilbert.

The Nevada boys won the 4 X 200-meter relay, took second in the 4 X 100 and claimed four individual silver medals. The Cubs scored 90 points to place fourth out of nine teams behind North Polk (116), Gilbert (113) and Roland-Story (97).

In the 4 X 200 Brendan Sellberg, Lane Hillock, Erik Fevold and Preston Cattanach won in one minute, 33.86 seconds. They beat North Polk’s runner-up time of 1:34.65.

Peyton Sharp and Sellberg took second and fourth respectively in the 100. Sharp was also runner-up in the open 400 and third in the 400 low hurdles and Sellberg earned a silver medal in the 200.

In the 100 Sharp crossed the finish line in :11.31 to trail only the :11.09 run by Greene County’s Max Neese. Sellberg clocked in at :11.33.

Sharp’s 400 time was 53 seconds flat, coming in behind the :52.41 run by Roland-Story’s Alex Teig and just beating out the :53.23 run by the Norsemen’s Patrick Marlow. In the 400 low hurdles Sharp ran a :59.55 to just edge out the :59.59 run by Gilbert’s Alex Sharp for third behind the winning :55.85 by Greene’ County’s Daric Whipple and :56.91 runner-up showing from Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s Brady Stover.

Sellberg crossed the finish line of the 200 in :23.53. He came in behind Neese’s winning time of :23.26.

The same Cub quartet that won the 4 X 200 took second in the 4 X 100. The Nevada team ran a :44.72 to finish just behind Roland-Story’s :44.63.

Malachi Hornbuckle won a silver in the 3,200 and he also placed fourth in the 1,600.

In the 3,200, Hornbuckle completed the race in 10:31.13 to beat out the 10:33.65 run by Prairie City-Monroe’s Chris Ellens to take second behind the 10:24.15 run by Roland-Story’s Dakota Rusher. Hornbuckle ran the 1,600 in 4:58.39.

In the girls’ competition Nevada scored 56 points to place seventh out of nine teams. Gilbert won with 150.5 points, North Polk took second with 124.5 points and PCM and CMB also scored over 100 points with 107 and 101 respectively.

The Nevada girls won the sprint medley and 4 X 100 relays. They were favored to win the 4 X 200 as well, but ended up getting disqualified in the race.

In the sprint medley Jordan McKinney, Abby Stephenson, Lindsey Haley and Alli Fey ran a 1:54.81 to easily top North Polk’s runner-up time of 1:57.38. In the 4 X 100, the same quartet ran in the order of McKinney, Stephenson, Fey and Haley, running a winning time of :51.66 to comfortably top Gilbert’s second-place showing of :52.42.

Haley and McKinney also took third and fourth respectively in the 100. Haley ran a :13.34 and McKinney finished in :13.47 as they trailed the :13.20 run by Greene County’s Megan Durbin and the :13.26 from CMB’s Toni Spencer.

Nevada also picked up a bronze in the 4 X 800. Kaylee Kruse, Ryanne Barker, Nicole Dewell and Caitlin Dewell teamed to run a 10:56.59, coming in behind only the 10:24.31 run by Gilbert’ and North Polk’s 10:43.28 showing.

In field events the Nevada girls saw Lexy Koudelka win a silver medal in the shot put. Koudelka’s throw of 37 feet, one inch edged out the 36-11 throw by CMB’s Payge Jurgens for second behind the winning 42-3 toss from Gilbert’s Mia Davis.

The Nevada track teams compete again today at the Class 3A state qualifying meet back at Gilbert. The meet will begin at 4 p.m.
