Nevada boys dominate at TCI
POLK CITY — The Nevada boys’ golf team pushed a powerful Gilbert squad hard, taking second at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet Tuesday at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.
Nevada finished just eight strokes behind the Tigers over 18 holes on one of the premier courses in Iowa. The Cubs scored a 312 to Gilbert’s 304.
“Pretty solid day turned in by our guys,” Nevada head coach Ryan Brown said. “We knew Gilbert would be tough to beat. We gave it a good run.”
Three Cub golfers made all-conference. Braydon Otto, Cole Gidel and Cameron Shill placed third, fourth and fifth respectively in the individual scoring behind Gilbert’s Garret Jensen and Tommy Doyle.
Otto shot a four-over par 75 with rounds of 37 and 38. Gidel shot a 36 and a 40 to score a 76 and Shill picked up a 77 with a 41 on the front and an impressive 36 on the back. Dylan Sporrer turned in the final counted score for Nevada with an 84 after nine-hole scores of 39 and 45.
Jake DeVries added an 89 and Preston Shill had a 91 as the other competing golfers for Nevada.
Brown hopes his team can continue its momentum from the HOIC meet and a win at TCI one week earlier over the next week, as postseason play is set to begin shortly.
“It’s going to be a pretty intense seven days,” Brown said. “The Roland-Story Invite on Thursday, Grinnell Invite on Monday, Webster City Invite (next) Tuesday and the true test (next) Thursday at sectionals. I still think we have our best golf ahead of us.”
Jensen won medalist at the HOIC meet by shooting one-under par as he recorded a 70. Doyle finished with a 73.
