Cub boys place fifth at Norsemen Relays

STORY CITY — The Nevada boys’ track team turned in a top-five performance and Colo-Nesco picked up three bronze medals at the Boys’ Norsemen Relays April 28 in Story City.

Nevada scored 63 points to place fifth out of 10 teams. Ballard won with 91 points, Roland-Story and Ogden tied for second with 78 points apiece and South Hamilton scored 68 points to place fifth.

The Cub 4 X 100-meter relay team of Brendan Sellberg, Lane Hillock, Erik Fevold and Peyton Sharp warmed up for the Drake Relays by taking first at Story City. The Nevada team ran a time of 44.45 seconds to beat out Roland-Story’s :44.80 effort for the gold.

Sellberg and Sharp also took first and third respectively in the 100 dash. Sellberg’s winning time was :11.46 and Sharp clocked in at :11.52.

Steven Dolley won an individual gold for Nevada in the discus. Dolley’s winning throw of 136 feet, 10 inches was 3.5 feet better than the runner-up effort by North Polk’s Connor Jackson.

Dolley added a fourth-place throw of 46-10.5 in the shot put.

Malachi Hornbuckle turned in one silver and bronze medal apiece for Nevada in distance events.

Hornbuckle took second to Ogden’s Andrew Stumbo in the 3,200 with a time of 10:32.94. Stumbo’s winning time of 10:27.63.

In the 1,600 Hornbuckle crossed the finish line in 4:51.92 to come in behind Stumbo’s 4:46.64 and the 4:47.64 run by South Hamilton’s Logan Peters.

Nevada placed fourth in the 4 X 200 with a time of 1:39.82. Ross Mitchell, Tavrie Ferguson, A.J. Strottman and Jakob Strottman ran the four legs for the Cubs.

Caleb Cobbs and Grant Tiarks won individual bronze medals for Colo-Nesco. The Royals also took third in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Cobbs came in third behind Stumbo and Hornbuckle in the 3,200 with a time of 10:36.86.

Tiarks picked up his bronze in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :17.38. Ballard’s Sam Upah and North Polk’s Quinton Sommers took first and second in the 110 highs with respective times of :16.40 and :16.46.

In the shuttle hurdle Caleb Vaughn, Brady Stoeffler, Philip Bower and Tiarks teamed to run a 1:06.27. Ballard won in 1:04.25 and Clarion-Goldfield took second with a 1:05.75 showing.

Kelly Gray, Garret Tiarks, Stoeffler and Cobbs ran a fourth-place time of 3:44.50 in the 4 X 400 for Colo-Nesco.

The Royal 4 X 800 team of Stoeffler, Gray, Garret Tiarks and Steven Cutler came in fifth with a 8:48.84 showing. Christian Montgomery, Tanner Clatt and Garrett Packer teamed with Garret Tiarks to come in fifth in the 4 X 200 with a time of 1:40.28.

Montgomery, Clatt, Garret Tiarks and Cobbs added a fifth-place time of 3:57.45 in the distance medley.

Steven Cutler took fifth individually in the 1,600 with a time of 4:58.29. As team Colo-Nesco placed 10th with 38 points.
