Six Cubs place at Jones Brothers tourney

IOWA FALLS - The Nevada wrestling team had six wrestlers place at the Jones Brothers Invitational Saturday in Iowa Falls.

Four Cub wrestlers placed fourth in their respective weight classes. Nevada also had two individuals come in fifth as the Cubs scored 71 points to place 11th in the team standings.

Cale Dumbaugh, Wayne Beard, Luke Durkop and Trice Logsdon each took fourth for Nevada in their respective weight classes.

Dumbaugh went 2-2 at 113 pounds.

Dumbaugh pinned Austin McFall in 54 seconds during the quarterfinals and lost by fall to Newman Catholic’s Jeremiah Colon in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Dumbaugh pinned North Butler’s Trevor Brinkman in 2:36, then in the third-place match he lost by fall to Vinton-Shellsburg’s.

Wayne Beard was 2-2 at 132 for Nevada.

In the the quarterfinals Beard was pinned by Iowa Falls-Alden’s Dillon Rubow, but he came back to whip Algona’s Mitchell Priebe by a 12-0 major decision in the consolation third round. Beard pinned Clarksville’s Stirling Kroeze in 1:09 during the consolation semifinals, but he came up short in the third-place match by losing again by fall to Rubow.

Luke Durkop and Trice Logsdon were the other Cub wrestlers to place fourth. Durkop went 2-2 at 170 and Logsdon was 1-2 at 285.

Durkop lost by fall to North Butler’s Austin Janssen in the quarterfinals, but he responded with a 6-2 victory over Newman Catholic’s Noah Ball in the consolation third round. Durkop pinned Iowa Valley’s Jayson Krakow in 1:29 during the consolation semifinals and in the third-place match he lost a rematch to Janssen by fall.

Logsdon was pinned by Iowa Falls-Alden’s Zack Duncan in the semifinals. Logsdon came back to pin West Marshall’s Cody Butler in 2:47 during the consolation semifinals and in the third-place match, he lost by fall to North Butler’s Owen Landers.

Alex Peebles and Hunter Beard each placed fifth at 182 and 220 respectively. Both wrestlers finished the day with a 1-2 record.

Peebles lost a tough 4-2 battle with Algona’s Noah Murphy in the quarterfinals. After receiving a couple of byes, Peebles was defeated in another heartbreaker during the consolation semifinals, this time losing to Clarksville’s Noah Doty by sudden victory, 5-3.

Peebles regrouped to end the tournament on a high note, winning the fifth-place match by fall over Aplington-Parkersburg’s Jacob Gochenouer in 29 seconds.

Beard lost by fall to Clarksville’s Trace Engel in the quarterfinals, then suffered another loss via pin to Iowa Falls-Alden’s Victor Sanchez in the consolation semifinals at 220. In the fifth-place match, Beard pinned North Butler’s James Seehusen in 1:39.

Iowa Falls-Alden edged West Marshall for the team championship as the Cadets scored 196 points to the Trojans’ 192. Vinton-Shellsburg came in third with a score of 166.

SAYDEL - Nevada went 1-1 in a Heart of Iowa Conference double dual with Greene County and Saydel Dec. 17 at Saydel.

The Cubs defeated Greene County by a 42-25 score and fell to Saydel by a 57-18 margin to move to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in HOIC dual competition.

Nevada was helped out by forfeits in a big way in its victory over Greene County. The Cubs only had to win one match to earn the victory.

Wayne Beard picked up the victory for Nevada against the Rams at 138 pounds. Beard pinned Isaac Ireland in one minute, 53 seconds.

Alex Peebles (182), Gunner Lyon (195), Hunter Beard (220), Trice Logsdon (285), Nick Walleser (126) and Luke Ferguson (145) each received a forfeit for Nevada against Greene County.

Forfeits accounted for all of Nevada’s points in the loss to Saydel. Peebles (182), Lyon (195) and Logsdon (220) picked up the Cub forfeits versus the Eagles.
