No. 1 Cub girls move to 6-0 in HOIC

NEVADA - A dominant second half helped Nevada roll past Gilbert by a 42-23 score to remain unbeaten in Heart of Iowa Conference play Friday at Nevada.

The top-ranked Cubs struggled offensively over the first two quarters. At the half they were clinging to a 12-8 lead.

But in the second half things started to click for the Cubs. They put up 15 points in each of the final two quarters and also continued to suffocate Gilbert on defense to pull away and improve to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the HOIC heading into Christmas break.

Nevada held Gilbert to 10 of 37 shooting from the field. The Cubs also had 12 steals to Gilbert’s two and they won the rebounding battle by a 23-20 margin.

On offense Nevada shot 38 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers. The Cubs had 11 assists on 15 field goals.

Guards Claire Ausman and Alli Fey combined for 25 points in the victory.

Ausman led Nevada with 15 points. She made 4 of 10 3-pointers and also had two steals.

Fey put up 10 points. She made two 3-pointers and added four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.

Kati Cassabaum and Lexy Koudelka made life rough inside for Gilbert on the defensive side of the ball. They also combined for 17 points.

Cassabaum had nine points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and six blocks. Koudelka recorded eight points, eight rebounds, three steals, one assist and two blocks.

Abby Stephenson chipped in two assists and one steal for Nevada.

Sarah Hinners had five points and eight rebounds and Tate Powers added five points and three rebounds for Gilbert. Valentine Jung chipped in four points and rebounds apiece for the Tigers, who fell to 6-1 in the HOIC and 6-4 overall.

STORY CITY - A well-rounded offensive attack combined with defensive dominance in the low post to give No. 1 Nevada a decisive 60-29 victory over Roland-Story Dec. 15 in Story City.

Nevada had three players score in double figures and two more net at least six points. The Cubs also held Roland-Story to just one field goal inside the 3-point arc, improving to 5-0 in the HOIC.

Nevada led 30-12 at the half after scoring 15 points apiece in the first two quarters. The Cubs went up 46-18 after three quarters and coasted the rest of the way.

Kati Cassabaum had 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks inside for Nevada. Lexy Koudelka added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in the low post for the Cubs.

Ally Fey hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, two assists and two steals for the Cubs. Claire Ausman also drained a pair of 3-pointers as she ended up with seven points, four assists and one block.

Izzy Kapustka stepped into the starting lineup and provided six points, six rebounds and four assists. Amaris Hornbuckle added four points and three rebounds, Amanda Fortmann chipped in two points and Hattie Rhodes delivered two points and three rebounds for the Cubs.

Jenna Clark led Roland-Story with seven points. Alexa Whipple recorded two points, eight rebounds and two assists and Madison Friest had four points, four rebounds and two blocks for the Norse.
