Nevada boys breeze past two HOIC foes

JEFFERSON - The one-two inside-outside punch of Matt Chitty and Cole Gidel lifted the Nevada boys’ basketball team to an impressive 64-47 road victory over Greene County Dec. 10 at Jefferson.

Chitty had a season-high 20 points in the low post for Nevada and Gidel put up 21 points at guard. Chitty also had eight rebounds and two blocks and Gidel finished with 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The outstanding Cub duo carried the load on offense, but Nevada was tremendous on the boards as a team and tough defensively down the stretch..

A rough second quarter allowed Greene County to rally from a 10-point deficit to tie the score at 23-23 by halftime. But in the second half, Nevada put up 41 points and held Greene County to eight points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

For the game Nevada posted a huge 36-19 rebounding advantage, including 10-2 on the offensive glass. The Cubs also held Greene County to 8 of 25 shooting from 3-point range and they made 18 of 24 free throws, compared to the Rams’ 7 of 10 showing from the line.

Joseph Heintz added seven points, three rebounds and one steal; Tyler Shafer had five points, six rebounds and four assists and A.J. Strottman put up four points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists for Nevada. Bennett Thompson chipped in two points and five assists.

With the win Nevada moved to 3-1 both overall and in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Greene County fell to 1-3 and 1-2 respectively.

Ried Lamoureux led Greene County with 14 points against Nevada. Trey Tucker had eight points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Trey Hinote and Max Neese scored eight points apiece for the Rams.

SAYDEL - An awesome stretch of defense in the third quarter enabled Nevada to pull away from Saydel for a 45-24 victory Dec. 8 at Saydel High School.

Nevada blanked Saydel in the third quarter. The Cubs played tough defensively in the first half to build a 20-12 lead, then they turned it up a notch in the third to claim an insurmountable 31-12 advantage heading into the final period.

The Cubs racked up an impressive 19 steals on the night. They also held Saydel to 30-percent shooting from the field (9 of 30).

Cole Gidel led all scorers with 22 points for Nevada. He also led Nevada’s aggressive play on defense with nine steals.

Joseph Heintz went 4 of 4 from the field with nine points and he added four rebounds for Nevada. Tyler Shafer had five points off the bench; A.J. Strottman put up three points, four rebounds and two steals; Luke Merfeld netted four points and blocked one shot; Matt Chitty tallied two points and a block and Trent Stahl handed out four assists for Nevada.

Kole Walker put up 10 points and five rebounds for Saydel. Rece Martin added six points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.
