Royal CC teams place third at ISC meet

WAVERLY - The Colo-Nesco cross country teams both stepped up their performance level at the Iowa Star Conference meet Oct. 16 at the Wartburg College cross country course in Waverly.

Both Royal teams placed third at the meet. The Colo-Nesco boys competed against six other scored teams and five teams had scores counted in the girls’ competition.

“I thought our kids ran their best races at conference,” Colo-Nesco head coach Tony Stalzer said. “They all stepped up and worked together as a team.”

In the boys’ race, Colo-Nesco had four top-15 runners, scoring 39 points. The Royals only trailed Valley Lutheran by two points for second and they were 11 points behind Dunkerton’s winning score.

Steven Cutler was an all-conference performer for the Royal boys. Cutler placed third with a 5-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 10.2 seconds.

Don Bosco’s Colin McFadden won in 17:21.0 and Dunkerton’s Jordan Yessak took second in 17:36.1. Valley Lutheran’s David Stone and Josh Wynstra came in behind Cutler with respective times of 18:31.3 and 18:42.7.

Elliot Morgan took 12th for Colo-Nesco with a time of 19:30.9 and Caleb Cobbs was right behind him in 13th place with a 19:31.5 showing. Cole Dulaney took 14th for the Royals in 19:39.3.

Caleb Vaughn was the final scored runner for the Royal boys as he came in 24th at 21:22.8.

The girls’ competition saw Colo-Nesco score 56 points to beat Dunkerton by eight points for third. Don Bosco won with 21 points and Tripoli was second with a score of 34.

Grace Stalzer was the top individual runner for the Royal girls with a 16th-place 4-kilometer time of 19:20.9. Angela Brinkman and Shelby Smith both placed in the top 20 for the Royals as Brinkman took 19th in 20:05.1 and Smith came in 20th at 20:09.5.

Leah Vincent ran a 23rd-place time of 21:17.0 and Stephanie Norris clocked in at 21:42.9 to place 27th as the other scored runners for the Royal girls.

Tripoli’s Lauren Block was the girls’ individual champion with a time of 15:48.4. North Tama’s Abi Watson was the only other runner to finish in less than 16 minutes as she clocked in at 15:58.0.
