The Nevada JV boys’ basketball team has had a good start to its season. The team goes into Christmas break with three wins and one defeat.

On Dec. 5, they started their year with a loss to PCM, 49-59. Too many mistakes in the first game of the year, and not enough defense, was too much to overcome against a solid Mustang team. The Cubs were led by Joe Heintz’s hot shooting en route to 17 points, including five three-pointers.

The Cubs then got on the winning track with a 50-35 victory over Greene County on Dec. 12. Nevada built a solid 10-point half-time lead and then held off a third quarter Ram comeback to secure the win. The Cubs held the Rams to zero two-point baskets in the second half and only five two-point baskets for the game. They were led by Erik Fevold’s 16 points, six rebounds and five steals, and Chris Dobernecker’s 10 points and six rebounds.

On Dec. 13, Nevada won their second game in as many nights, defeating North Polk, 50-34. The Cubs played solid defense throughout the game to defeat a tough Comet team. The balanced scoring attack was led by Zach Hansen’s nine points. Dobernecker and Duncan Westphal each chipped in eight points, while Noah Stowe and Heintz each had seven.

Nevada closed out their pre-Christmas break portion of the season with a 51-34 victory over Saydel on Dec. 17. The defense was stout as the Cubs shut out the Eagles in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Once again the scoring attack was balanced as Hansen, Heintz and Bennett Thompson each had eight points. Stowe and Fevold each contributed seven points, Westphal had six points and Stephen Dolley added four points and six rebounds.
