Three Cubs make all-HOIC first team in volleyball

Three members of the Nevada volleyball team were named to the all-Heart of Iowa Conference first team after helping the Cubs win the conference championship with a perfect 9-0 record.

Senior outside hitter Megan Pringnitz, junior setter Michaela Matuska and sophomore middle blocker Kati Cassabaum all made the first team from Nevada. All three had an integral role in helping the Cubs go 32-12 overall and reach the state tournament in Class 3A.

Pringnitz and Matuska were the only unanimous choices to the first team.

Pringnitz hammered down 98 kills on a .277 kill-efficiency rate and she chipped in 75 digs and 15 aces in conference play. Matuska dished out 245 assists in 28 sets and she also registered a 94.6-percent serving rate, with 18 aces, against HOIC foes.

Cassabaum ended up with 71 kills and 14 blocks against conference competition.

Making up the rest of the all-HOIC first team were North Polk outside hitters Megan Murphy and Lilly Lomica, Roland-Story’s Anna and Lauren Himan, Gilbert’s Alex Miner and South Hamilton’s Hannah Pulis.

Nevada also put two players on the all-HOIC second team.

Freshman outside hitter Abby Stephenson contributed 72 digs, 56 kills and 11 aces in conference play. Senior libero Jessica Helton also delivered 72 digs and she tacked on 16 aces.

Senior middle blocker Emma Lodestein and junior outside hitter Mara Rhodes were named all-HOIC honorable mention from Nevada. Lodestein produced 39 kills, 15 aces and 14 blocks and Rhodes had 44 kills and eight blocks.
