To the editor:

As we celebrate the holiday season, I encourage everyone to consider participating in the 2016 Fill the Foyer campaign. Through the month of January, Fill the Foyer is a collection providing needed supplies to local families. It is exciting to be entering our second year of this city-wide project.

You can participate by dropping off nonperishable food items, toiletries, clothing or blankets in the Nevada City Hall foyer during normal business hours in January. All items will be dispersed to one of three local nonprofit programs: Harmony Clothing Closet, Nevada Community Cupboard and Cubbie’s Cupboard School Food Pantry.

These three programs are very active in helping the children and families of Nevada by providing services to meet basic needs. Winter clothing, blankets, and bedding are in need by many families as the temperatures start to drop. Recycling on this local level will benefit many of our friends and neighbors. Food and hygiene donations will be sent to both Nevada food pantries. While we often equate the holidays with food, the need for some families extends past just food products and into all groceries. For many people, everyday purchases are a big challenge, including hygiene items, baby formula and laundry detergent. Fill the Foyer really helped fill the gap last year.

The Fill the Foyer campaign is a great way for our community to reduce food and clothing insecurity. We can help our neighbors and friends who are under daily pressure to make tough decisions. Skipping meals to pay a bill or purchase medication is a reality for many. Let’s warm the hearts of those in need this season and Fill the Foyer with your donations.
