In response to the upcoming RAGBRAI event through Story County, the Story County Board of Supervisors acted on May 29 (subject to a 14-day review) to restrict vendors from setting up within the road right-of-ways along the route in the unincorporated areas of the county. However, vending is not restricted on private properties located along the route in the unincorporated areas of the county, provided a Special Events Permit is obtained from the Story County Board of Supervisors.

Purpose of the Special Events Permit

The Special Events Permit addresses those events lasting longer than four hours and involving greater than 250 participants, volunteers and spectators. The primary purposes of the Special Events Permit are to focus on protections to participants, volunteers and spectators involved in the event, including adjacent property owners and motorists, and to communicate the plans with applicable emergency response entities so they are better informed and able to adequately respond in the event of an emergency.

Special Events Permit applications are required to be submitted 21 days prior to the event. The applications are reviewed by county staff and other applicable entities within two business days, and ultimately acted on by the Board of Supervisors at a public meeting.

Special Events Permit Submittals

To request a Special Events permit, applicants should submit a Special Events application, $50 submittal fee and the other required information to the Story County Planning and Development Department at 900 Sixth St., Nevada, or pzweb@storycountyiowa.gov. Special Events applications may be downloaded and information about the Special Event submittal requirements obtained from the Story County website at www.storycountyiowa.gov, found under Story County Planning and Development Department and Applications and Permits. Specific submittal information is located in the Special Events Ordinance, Chapter 83 found on the Planning and Development website. Please contact the Story County Planning Development Department regarding questions at pzweb@storycountyiowa.gov or by calling 515-382-7245.
