“Flying” broomsticks…capturing the snitch…quidditch is here and you can see it live! The U.S. Quidditch 2016 Midwest Regional Championships are coming to SCORE Recreational Athletic Complex in Nevada. The event will be held on Nov. 12-13, and will be hosted by the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau and Nevada Parks and Recreation.

The U.S. Quidditch 2016 Midwest Regional Championships will feature teams from Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Quidditch, inspired by the Harry Potter novels, is a fast paced, gender-integrated, full-contact sport, and is a cross between basketball, soccer and dodgeball. Quidditch is played with seven players to a team, all mounted on brooms. Scoring points occurs with a quaffle (volleyball) and the snitch, a neutral yellow-clad athlete who tries to avoid being captured.

“We’re really looking forward to our event in Nevada! The facility we’re at, SCORE Recreational Athletic Complex, has great amenities,” said Mary Kimball, events director for U.S. Quidditch. “Working with the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau has made planning go so smoothly. We’re excited to bring our teams from the Midwest region to Iowa for an awesome weekend of quidditch.”

The general public is welcome to attend and see one of the fastest-growing sports based on a fantasy series. Event times are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with free admission.
