28-year-old Iowa man serving 2-year sentence dies by suicide in state prison, state officials say
A 28-year-old man serving a state prison sentence died by suicide Saturday evening at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center, according to the Department of Corrections.
Anthony William Gertz was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. The department is investigating his death.
In past prison suicides, officials have taken months to complete and release autopsy results and other findings. The family of Christopher James Rios, a 28-year-old man who officials said died by suicide in November, spent months seeking answers and investigation materials from the state, which refused to disclose many records sought by the Register.
According to the department, Gertz was serving a two-year sentence for assault on a peace officer out of Cherokee County. He'd begun his sentence on Dec. 17, 2020.
