Boone theater group opens 'Treasure Island' Friday
It’s got swashbuckling, danger and adventure in this popular coming of age tale. The Boone Community Theatre is kicking off its 2021-22 season with Ken Ludwig’s stage adaptation of the famed novel “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, to be staged Sept. 17, 18, 23 and 24 at 7 p.m., and Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Open Bible Church, 1224 Hancock Drive in Boone.
The show will be presented in the round in the gym, where the audience will surround the stage.
“We’ve done one other show like this before and you realize how close you are to the audience. With an action-packed show like this, you feel like you’re right in the middle of it,” said John Hoffman, who portrays several characters in the play.
Gershom and Jonathan Levi are directing it.
“We chose this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale because it preserves the story’s heart using poignant monologues to connect the scenes,” said Jonathan Levi, who co-directs with his brother Gershom. “By setting the play in the round, we are allowing audience members to sit as close as possible to the action — right in the middle of the betrayal, drama and excitement.”
Hoffman said from the opening scene, the audience would be captivated in the quest to find the treasure.
“The story keeps you guessing, unless you’ve read the book, of course,” he said with a laugh.
The show opens with a scene from the inn on the Devon coast of England in 1775 where young Jim Hawkins has a thirst for adventure. He goes in search of pirates’ treasure and confronts Black Dog, Anne Bonny and Blind Pew. Long John Silver is considered the most famous hero-villain of all time.
Hoffman noted that a different area theater had put on a similar show recently and allowed BCT the use of its costumes.
“That’s one nice thing with community theater: we tend to help each other out when we can,” he added.
The cast consists of teen and adult-age actors. Due to the size of the cast, many of them are playing two to three roles that vary in time on stage.
“I go off stage and die and immediately come on as my other character,” Hoffman said. “Things like that are fun with theater. It’s fun to have a good challenge like that.”
Hoffman has appeared in several BCT shows and has served on the board.
“Live theater is something we don’t see as much of as we did a generation ago, especially community theaters,” he said. “With ours, we have a lot of young people and that’s a good sign for the longevity of it.”
Since the story was written for children, the play is aimed at folks of all ages.
Advance tickets are available online at boonecommunitytheatre.org. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students with an ID and those age 65 or older. Season tickets are also available for $60 at the door.
