Republicans holding leads as late voting continued in Story County

With voting still occurring at one precinct in Ames, Republicans held strong leads as votes continued to be counted in Story County Tuesday night.

A little before 11 p.m., Scott Schaben, the Republican candidate for Story County Supervisor had a lead over Democrat Lauris Olson and Democratic incumbent Wayne Clinton, who ran as a no-party by petition candidate.

The late results also did not include the 22,000 early voters and absentee ballots that had yet to be counted, according to officials in the Story County Auditor’s Office.

Republican Becky Jordan was leading incumbent Democrat Lucy Martin, and Martin Chitty was ahead of Democrat Linda Murken with nearly all precincts reporting.

One precinct was still letting voters cast ballots because of long lines and a large-number of same-day registration, auditor’s office officials said.

In state legislative races, Democratic incumbent Beth Wessel-Kroeschell was leading Republican challenger Sondra Childs-Smith in the House District 45 race. Republican incumbent Dave Deyoe was ahead in his bid to retain his House District 49 race; and Republican incumbent Rob Bacon appeared to be on his way to re-election in House District 48.

In national and statewide races, Republican Donald Trump had an 8 percentage point lead over Democrat Hillary Clinton in Iowa, and both Republican incumbents Sen. Charles Grassley and Congressman Steve King had sizeable leads in their races.
