Nevada FFA earns gold at state FFA equine contest

Nevada FFA Horse Evaluation team placed ninth out of 49 teams to earn a gold award at the Iowa FFA State Horse Evaluation Career Development Event held on Thursday, May 12, at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. Nicole Dewell was sixth highest individual score overall out of 196 students competing. Megan Mumm placed 36th highest individual score overall. Students had several classes of horses to judge, including at halter, equitation, performance classes, problem-solving, general knowledge written exam and two classes of oral reasons. Other team members included Madysen Farmer and Cassidy Goos. “I have to give much credit to Nicole Dewell in preparation of the team, she has an exemplary level of equine knowledge, and articulates this information well to others,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada ag ed instructor and FFA advisor. Cooper accompanied the students to the contest.

The next FFA Career Development Event is the Veterinary Science CDE that includes a general knowledge exam and a constructing a protocol demonstration. Both Nicole and Caitlin Dewell have expressed interest in leading this FFA skills career development event.
