100th year celebration of Shipley school

Alumni and friends of the Shipley Consolidated School will gather on Friday, June 10, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the school, located just southwest of Nevada. The cornerstone was placed in 1916, with the first classes starting during the spring of the 1916-1917 school year. The gymnasium was added in 1939.

Starting with one graduate in 1921, the enrollment peaked in 1937 with a graduating class of 19. The final class graduated in 1959. Most of the students in the district then consolidated with Nevada, except for a few from the southwestern part of the district who went to Ballard.

The June 10 celebration will be held at Gatherings, 1024 Sixth St. in Nevada, starting at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6. The cost is $15 per person, payable at the door. Any interested persons are welcome.

Reservations can be made with Gary Bates (515-231-0030), Larry Sweeney (sweeney5099@gmail.com) or Nancy Goosic Reiter (pcreiter@aol.com). Please RSVP by June 1.
