Drug Drop Off event to help prevent misuse
Prescription medications are among the most highly abused substances in America, second only to marijuana. To help bring light to this issue and prevent further abuse of these medications, NuCara Pharmacy in Nevada is partnering with Nevada Police, YSS of Eastern Story County Board and the Story County Prevention Policy board to offer a Drug Drop-Off event on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m.-noon. NuCara Pharmacy is located at 1002 Sixth St.
Accepted items include unused or expired prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications, such as pills, lotions, liquids, expired pet medications, vitamins and supplements. Sharps such as needles, lancets, razor blades and thermometers to be destroyed will not be accepted.
The Drug Enforcement Agency states that youth who abuse medications often get these substances from their family, friends and even their family medicine cabinets.
Story County youth who participated in the 2014 Iowa Youth Survey reported current use of over-the-counter and prescription medications in a way other than directed. According to this survey, 7 percent of 11th-graders, 3 percent of eighth-graders and 1 percent of sixth-graders reported misusing prescription medications. Among 11th-grade students, 8 percent stated they misused over-the-counter medications. This was lower for eighth-graders at 3 percent, and sixth-graders at 1 percent, reporting misusing prescription medications.
