Renew passports early at Story County Recorder’s office in Nevada

In anticipation of spring break and summer vacation international travel, the Story County Recorder’s office would like to remind everyone that the office accepts passport applications Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary. The recorder’s office can also take passport photos, to be used with new applications or renewals for $10 per person.

Passport Services is expecting an increase in passport applications through 2018, and is encouraging customers to apply as early as possible to avoid problems with receiving their passports. Applying during the off-peak months (August through December) can help ensure that an application is processed well within the four- to six-week service commitment for routine requests, thus avoiding paying the extra $60 fee for expedited processing that may become necessary during peak season months (January through July).

For those who already have a passport, check your renewal date, especially if you plan to travel in the next two years. With the implementation of the North American Travel Initiative in 2007, Passport Services saw a dramatic increase in their workload, leading to longer than usual issuance times and causing problems for many travelers. The reason this is significant is that adult passports issued in 2007 will be expiring in 2017. Passport services have added staff since 2007, but it is still recommended that you apply early to avoid any long delays. If you meet the guidelines, you may be able to do your renewal by mail without appearing at a passport acceptance facility, but the recorder’s office is still available to assist you in the preparation of your renewal application.

Passport forms, passport fees, and a list of required materials can be found at the Department of State’s official website, travel.state.gov. We strongly encourage you to call our office at 515-382-7230 if you have any questions regarding the application process.
