Raising Readers in Story County receives $6,000 community grant

Raising Readers in Story County (RRSC) received the $6,000 Suzan Shierholz Award from the Story County Community Foundation on Thursday, Nov. 5, for work in early literacy development for communities and families. RRSC Executive Director Kim Hanna (center) and RRSC Director Carolyn Jons (right) received the award from Jim Black, Story County Community Foundation (SCCF) advisory board member, during the ceremony in Ames.

Hanna said that “The grant will be used to increase the work RRSC is doing in Story County to improve early literacy. In particular, we will be increasing our programs in the Nevada school district, as well as adding an RRSC program in at least one other Story County community by summer 2016.” The grant will also be used by RRSC to expand their summer Reading Buddies program in Ames. “The grant allows us to purchase more books for our lending library for the program, which results in the students being able to take books home between tutoring sessions to add to their reading at home.”

The Suzan Shierholz Award is named in honor of the founding president of the SCCF board. As a volunteer, Suzan took on many responsibilities for SCCF management, donor service and the community grant program. Each year, Suzan picks a project that supports a better life for children. This year’s Shierholz grant went to Raising Readers in Story County, who seek to improve language and literacy development in children from birth to age 8 and nurture healthy parent-child relationships.

SCCF received a total of 36 applications for 2015 community grants. Raising Readers in Story County was one of 19 applicants selected for the awards. Funding for the community grants is provided by the State of Iowa’s County Endowment Fund Program and local donors. SCCF is the designated administrator for the fund.

The 2016 SCCF community grants cycle will begin early in 2016, when updated information for applicants will be available at www.storycountyfoundation.org. Applications will be due in late September.
