Key Cooperative provides grain

Greg Artz and Ted Hammes of Key Cooperative visited Mr. Cooper’s block 4 class on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to present the “Bushels for Ag” program. Nevada FFA will receive 40 bushels of soybeans and 100 bushels of corn donated to participate in the program. Students must determine a marketing strategy and make decisions based on fundamental market information to sell at the optimum times. Artz explained basics of commodity price discovery, basis, futures and price-averaging over time. Also, an algorithm was shared that calculated input cost and necessary commodity priced and sold to achieve break even. Some calculations were worked through with students regarding crop insurance income and yield risk management.

Artz also explained his family’s business of producing heirloom vegetables for niche markets. Some of his vegetables include lighter-colored pumpkins and specially flavored Russian tomatoes varieties.
