Grant awards have great impact on Story County community

The Story County Community Foundation (SCCF) awarded 19 grants to Story County nonprofit organizations at a Nov. 5 ceremony at Reiman Gardens on the Iowa State University campus.

A total of $108,994 was awarded. Fourteen grants for a total of nearly $73,000 went to projects with county-wide impact. Another $36,000 went to five projects that will impact individual Story County communities. A major grant of $25,000 went to Story County Conservation for a Discovery Nature Playscape at McFarland Park.

Judy Jones and Becky Senti, co-chairs of the SCCF allocations committee, indicated 36 grant applications were submitted for requests totaling nearly $253,500.

The Suzan Shierholz Grant went to Raising Readers in Story County, who seek to improve language and literacy development in children from birth to age 8 and nurture healthy parent-child relationships. This grant is named in honor of Suzan Shierholz who was founding president of the SCCF board.

The money for the community grants is provided by the State of Iowa’s County Endowment Fund Program and local donors. SCCF is the state’s designated administrator for the Story County portion of the county endowment fund.
