IowaStater makes top 10 for 2019 Iowa’s Best Burger contest
The IowaStater Restaurant, in Ames, made the top 10 list for the 2019 Iowa’s Best Burger contest, according to a news release by the Iowa Cattleman’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council.
Stephen Hueholt, IowaStater Restaurant manager, said this is the second year the establishment has been nominated in the top 10.
“We are very excited to be nominated again this year,” he said. “I think we have a really good product using Iowa premium ingredients to compete again this year.”
Hueholt said he has worked at the establishment for six years. He started as a server and worked his way up and learned more about the hospitality industry — eventually becoming restaurant manager.
He said the reason the IowaStater has been nominated the past two years is because of the ingredients they use in their food and the people making the food.
“It comes down to the quality of the ingredients and just training the staff (to know) that every burger is consistently prepared,” Hueholt said.
To qualify for the contest, each establishment’s burger must be a 100 percent beef patty or patties, but other ingredients can be added such as spices and it has to be served on a bun or bread product, according to a press release. The burger can also include condiments, sauces, cheese or other toppings.
“Several restaurants have really unique and creative ways to encourage customers to vote. It was a close race to the finish line,” said Kylie Peterson, director of marketing for the Iowa Beef Industry Council, in a press release. “In total, we had over 500 towns and cities across Iowa represented which proves that there are a lot of great tasting burgers all across the state.”
There are two burgers at the IowaStater that Hueholt said are special to the restaurant, located in the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center, the first one being the IowaStater burger.
The IowaStater burger featured a beef patty on a Brioche roll with Prairie Breeze cheddar, and sweet and spicy IowaStater glazed bacon. The Hilton Magic has a beef patty on a Brioche roll with Pimento cheese spread, and IowaStater glazed bacon.
Each top 10 restaurant will be visited by a panel of anonymous judges that will evaluate the burgers, according to a press release. The burgers will be judged based on taste, appearance and how thoroughly cooked a cut of meat is based on different factors.
If the IowaStater Restaurant wins best burger this year, the establishment will be the third Ames restaurant to win the title in recent years.
Last year, Café Beaudelaire in Ames took home the title, and Brick City Grill won best burger in 2014. The winner for the 2019 Iowa’s best burger will be announced on May 1.
