C-N tops Grundy Center, Dunkerton

GILBERTVILLE – The first inning told the tale in the Colo-Nesco softball team’s Class 1A regional semifinal game against Don Bosco July 12 in Gilbertville.

The Royals were completely overpowered by the Dons in the opening frame as they gave up 10 runs. They were never able to recover from that, falling to the No. 5 team in 1A by a 12-0 score in three innings.

Erica Babinat took the loss for Colo-Nesco in her final game as a Royal. She allowed 11 hits and three walks and struck out the final batter she faced

Hannah Buseman singled in the third inning for Colo-Nesco’s only hit on offense. With the loss, Colo-Nesco finished the season at 10-17.

Karli Welter earned the victory for Don Bosco as she struck out three and didn’t walk a single batter, pitching all three innings. Brittany Hickson was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI and Lexy Hogan doubled and drove in two runs for the Dons.

GRUNDY CENTER – Colo-Nesco scored its second Class 1A regional victory July 10 as the Royals edged Iowa Star Conference rival Dunkerton in a 6-5 battle during the quarterfinals at Grundy Center.

Colo-Nesco took advantage of timely hitting and the long ball to down Dunkerton for the second time this season, despite being outhit, 10-7. The Royals defeated the Raiders by a 7-4 score in the regular season.

Erica Babinat and Sam Riese both went deep for Colo-Nesco. Babinat hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Riese hit a solo bomb to lead off the second inning.

Babinat also hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and Riese singled in third. McKenna Farren walked and scored the other Colo-Nesco run in the second.

Hannah Buseman, Shayla Dean, Madison Farren each tacked on one hit apiece for the Royals.

Babinat earned the victory on the mound. Babinat shut down Dunkerton over the final three innings to allow Colo-Nesco to pull ahead to stay and she compiled seven strikeouts and six walks over seven innings of work.

Dunkerton totaled 10 hits off Babinat. Jordyn Nagle was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, Bailey Epling went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Justine Nagle ended up 2-for-2 with two walks, one steal and one run for the Raiders.

Aubrey Duncan was the losing pitcher as she allowed four walks and struck out four in seven innings.

GRUNDY CENTER – The hits came early and often for Colo-Nesco in its Class 1A regional opener against Grundy Center July 8 as the Royals pounded out 13 base knocks in an impressive 18-8 victory over the Spartans in six innings at Grundy Center.

Both teams scored two runs in each of the first two innings and Colo-Nesco added two more scores in the third to take a 6-4 lead. Each team put four runs on the board in the fourth and then Colo-Nesco plated two unanswered runs in the fifth to build a 12-8 lead.

The Royals dropped the hammer on Grundy Center in the sixth. They put six runs on the board in their half of the inning and held the Spartans scoreless in the other half of the inning to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.

Seven of Colo-Nesco’s hits went for extra bases. Erica Babinat homered and doubled, Kylie Sarver hit one triple and double apiece, Sam Riese doubled twice and Madison Farren also hit a double.

Sarver also singled to finish with three hits. Shayla Dean and Kara Robinson each added two singles and McKenna Farren picked up one single for the Royals.

Babinat was the winning pitcher as she struck out two, walked five and allowed nine hits in six innings.

Kayla Matthews took the loss in relief for Grundy Center after giving up 12 runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings. Riley Ackerman allowed six runs on four hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in three innings for Grundy Center.

Jessika VanDeest went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI to pace the Spartans on offense.
