NEVADA — A near-record defensive performance resulted in Nevada destroying Greene County by a 65-7 score Jan. 26 at the Nevada High School Field House.

The Cubs held Greene County scoreless in the first quarter. By the middle of the third quarter Nevada had given up just one basket, forging a huge 50-2 lead.

The seven points Nevada ended up allowing was just off the school 5-on-5 record of fewest points allowed in a game of six.

"Our defense, we really take pride in it," Nevada guard Alli Fey said. "The record was six and we were trying to hold them under six. We were close."

Greene County frequently failed to even get off a shot on its end of the floor. When the Rams did get one off, it usually didn’t go in as they only converted 3 of 21 field goals on the night.

"We wanted to come out and have a faster-paced game - we hadn’t practiced since (the previous) Thursday and hadn’t touched a basketball since Friday, so we wanted to come out and look sharp," Nevada head coach Kristin Meyer said. "The girls enjoyed playing a little bit faster and defensively we really settled into knowing our roles and responsibilities and having good help defense."

Nevada also had plenty of success on offense. The fast pace resulted in several easy baskets and the Cubs ended up shooting 50 percent from the field and having an assist on 23 of 26 field goals.

The Cubs also shot well from outside, making 8 of 20 3-pointers. Fey led the way with a game-high 18 points as she canned 4 of 8 3-pointers.

"We do a lot of shooting in practice and they like to double our posts so that makes me wide open," Fey said. "It’s easy to shoot when you’re open."

Lexy Koudelka posted a double-double inside with 12 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four blocks. Kati Cassabaum added 12 points, five steals, three assists and one block from the low post.

Abby Stephenson also scored in double figures for Nevada with 10 points and she handed out seven assists. Claire Ausman finished with six points, five assists and five steals, Izzy Kapustka put up five points, Madison Abraham scored two and Grace Francis pulled down three rebounds.

Cassidy Adamson scored four points and Taylor Wessling netted the other three for Greene County.
