Nevada moves to 13-4 in HOIC
NEVADA – Two big innings helped the Nevada baseball team roll to a 14-2 victory over Colfax-Mingo in five innings July 9 at Billy Sunday Field in Nevada.
The game was tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the third inning. Then the Cubs erupted for six runs and they followed that up with another six-run outburst in the fourth to blow the game open.
Colfax-Mingo put up one run in the third, but the Tigerhawks were unable to score in the fourth and fifth frames as the game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
John Jamison and Owen Shawgo led a powerful 16-hit attack by the Nevada offense off Colfax-Mingo pitchers Jake Alexander and Caleb Anderson. Jamison was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and Shawgo finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and four RBI.
Alex Good and Patrick Stephenson were both 2-for-3 as well. Good scored twice and drove in a run and Stephenson crossed the plate twice.
Colynn Black and Brook Thompson both finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI. Chase Stout was 1-for-3 with two RBI; Zach Anderson doubled with a walk, two runs and an RBI and Chad Jamison finished 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Stout was the winning pitcher after giving up two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece in five innings to help Nevada improve to 17-11 overall and 13-3 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Alexander took the loss for Colfax-Mingo as he surrendered eight runs – six earned – with one strikeout and one walk in two innings. He also went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate, Trent Pease singled and drove in a run and Connor Hainer and Tim Blood both singled and scored once for the Tigerhawks.

NEVADA – A strong first two innings weren’t enough for Nevada against Gilbert July 8 as the Cubs were handed a 6-4 Heart of Iowa Conference loss by the Tigers at Billy Sunday Field.
Nevada jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring once in the first and three times in the bottom of the second. But Gilbert answered with three runs in the third and then took the lead in the fifth with two more unanswered scores.
Nevada’s offense continued to sputter over the sixth inning and Gilbert tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. The Cubs went scoreless for the fifth inning in a row in the bottom of the seventh to suffer only their third HOIC setback.
Alex Good went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in his first game back from an arm injury for Nevada. Colynn Black singled, walked and scored twice and Zach Anderson singled once for the Cubs’ only other hit.
Tanner Hanson walked stole a base and scored for the other Cub run and Patrick Stephenson also drew one walk. Black was the losing pitcher as he threw all seven innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Evan Johnson earned the win for Gilbert as he allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts and walks apiece in 5 1/3 innings. Jacob Adams went 2-for-4 with a steal and two RBI; Jordan Knock finished 2-for-4 with a run, steal and RBI; Johnson singled, scored and drove in a run; Dax Hatfield ended up 1-for-4 with a steal and a run and Wesley Greder scored twice for the Tigers.
