NEVADA - The Nevada boys’ basketball team was hurt by a poor start in a 67-60 non-conference loss to Iowa Falls-Alden Monday.

Nevada gave up 14 3-pointers in the loss. The Cubs only shot 24 percent from 3-point range and 36 percent from the field and they attempted just three free throws.

STORY CITY - An amazing offensive turnaround in the second half wasn’t enough for Nevada in a 70-63 loss to Roland-Story in its Heart of Iowa Conference opener Friday.

After being held to 11 points in the first half, Nevada exploded for 52 points over the final two quarters. But the Cubs dug themselves in a 21-point hole by the end of the first half and it

proved too big to dig out of as they fell to 1-1 on the season.

Roland-Story led 32-11 at the break.

“In the first half our inexperienced showed a little bit,” Nevada head coach Tyler Struck said. “I wasn’t upset with them. They were trying to make plays and trying to make shots. The problem was we were doing it too quick.”

The Norse also dominated the glass over the first two quarters, pulling down nearly 20 more rebounds than Nevada.

Struck tried to slow Roland-Story down with a zone defense. But Roland-Story’s size - the Norse have six players listed at 6-3 or taller - made them pay for that on the glass.

“The zone obviously eliminates a lot of that passing and cutting stuff, but then their size bothered us,” Struck said. “On the flip side when we went to man then their size didn’t bother us, but the cutting did.”

But Nevada rebounded much better in the second half, outdoing the Norse on the glass to end up with a 49-35 rebounding deficit for the game. The Cubs also shot the ball much better and as a result they got back in the game.

Nevada was still down 18 early in the fourth quarter. But Tyler Sansgaard got hot from outside, canning five 3-pointers to pull the Cubs back to within 57-52.

“We had some guys shoot it pretty well and biggest thing was our defensive intensity and rebounding helped,” Struck said. “We got out of the zone for awhile because we were behind and I think we did some good things with that and when we got back in the zone our rebounding was much-improved.”

The Cubs eventually pulled within four at 59-55 when Chase Lycke hit the first of two free-throw attempts with 1:51 remaining in regulation. But then Nevada ran out of gas.

Roland-Story went on a 9-2 run, with Nolan Faber hitting 5 of 6 free throws to push the Norse lead back to 68-57 and sew up the victory.

Sansgaard scored 26 of his game-high 29 points over the final two quarters. He exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter.

“He was getting frustrated in the first half - shots he would normally make just didn’t go in,” Struck said. “You could see in the second half when he got calmed down just a little bit and we were moving the ball and getting it back to him, he was able to get in that rhythm. He’s as good a shooter as anyone I’ve ever coached and for anyone that knows about my time in Nebraska that’s a pretty big statement because I’ve had some really good ones.”

Sansgaard also had five rebounds and two steals.

Henry Nelson added nine points, six rebounds and three blocks and Lycke seven points and three assists. Ty Dittmer netted six points, Cooper Bovee tacked on five points and three rebounds, Spencer Grant had four points and seven boards and Mylee Wilkerson scored three points for the Cubs.

Roland-Story improved to 2-0. Dylan Ihle lead the Norse with 20 points and four assists, Sam Skaar finished with 19 points and three assists and Adam McIlrath tallied nine points, 17 rebounds, four assists and two blocks for the Norse.
