OSKALOOSA - The Nevada baseball team’s season may have ended against Oskaloosa in the Class 3A district semifinals Friday, but the Cubs went down swinging in an 8-4 loss.


Nevada fell behind 3-0, but tied the game with three runs in the top of the third. Oskaloosa came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and upped its lead to 8-3 after five frames, but the Cubs blanked the Indians in the sixth and scored a run in the seventh to hang around until the final out.


“We put a great fight and never quit,” Nevada head coach Patrek Tufts said. “I was impressed with their grit.”


Nevada finished its first season under Tufts at 7-21.


“I love the leadership the seniors gave this younger class,” Tufts said. “This younger group has a lot of talent and the potential to do some great things, and I’m already looking forward to getting to work for next year.”


Catcher Keaton Fry doubled, walked and drove in two runs and Brock Dutton was 1-for-4 with one run, steal and RBI apiece for Nevada at the plate against Oskaloosa. Connor Hines singled, walked and scored and Ty Dittmer stole a base and scored twice.


Dylan Sporrer was the losing pitcher, surrendering five runs — four earned — on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Dutton gave up three runs — one earned — on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three innings.


Noah Van Veldhuizen allowed one unearned run and struck out nine with no walks in four innings as the winning Oskaloosa pitcher. Van Veldhuizen also doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in a run and Colton Butler doubled twice and scored once for the Indians.

NEVADA - Nevada turned it on when it mattered to down Iowa Falls-Alden, 8-7, in eight innings July 16 at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field.


Nevada rallied from a 5-0 deficit to end the regular season with a win. The Cubs improved to 7-20.


IFA scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. Nevada came back with two in the fifth, but IFA pushed its lead back to five runs with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.


In the bottom of the sixth Nevada started to really put things together. The Cubs scored three runs in the frame, then blanked the Cadets in the top of the seventh.


The bottom of the seventh saw Nevada send two runners home to tie the game and force extra innings. Relief pitcher Cael Franzen blanked IFA in the top of the eighth, allowing Nevada to score the winning run in the bottom of the inning.


Franzen got the win, giving up two unearned runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings. Dylan Sporrer tossed 2 ⅓ scoreless innings, allowing two hits and recording a pair of strikeouts and Brock Dutton gave up five runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk in one inning of work.


Nevada compiled 11 hits offensively. Ryne Isleb doubled twice, walked once and added two runs and RBIs apiece and James Carsrud was 1-for-4 with one walk, one steal and two runs to lead the Cubs.


Dutton finished 2-for-5 with a walk and two steals; Keaton Fry was 2-for-4 with a walk; Thomas Crawford singled, walked and scored and Sporrer finished 1-for-2 with a run, steal and RBI apiece. Dalton Baker and Grant Higgins each singled once, Franzen scored a run, Carter Franzen scored once and stole a base and Connor Hines walked and drove in a run.


Dylan Madden and Mason Kent each delivered two hits, a run and an RBI for IFA. Kortland Nehring surrendered six runs — just one earned — with two strikeouts in three innings as the losing Cadet pitcher.
