LEON - The Colo-NESCO softball team couldn’t keep pace with Central Decatur in a high-scoring 9-7 affair to open Class 1A regional competition July 8.
The Royals kept up with the Cardinals over the first three innings. Central Decatur scored five times in the second inning, but Colo-NESCO plated a run in the first, three in the second and another in the third to stay even heading into the fourth.
But Central Decatur scored three times in the fourth and kept Colo-NESCO off the board in the fourth and fifth frames. Central Decatur added another run in the sixth and the Royals were only able to produce two runs over the final four innings, finishing the season at 8-19.
Colo-NESCO compiled 11 hits in a losing effort. Rylee Purvis was 3-for-4 with two runs; Faith Vincent 2-for-3 with a run, walk and two RBIs and Gracie Kettwig 2-for-4 with a run.
Jenna Hill stepped up to go 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, one run, one steal and two RBIs. Megan Carlson was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Claire Skinner 1-for-4 with a run and Callie Kohlwes 1-for-4 for the Royals.
Purvis was the losing pitcher, allowing eight runs — just three earned — on 10 hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Kohlwes surrendered one run on two hits with one strikeout in two innings.
Kylee Rockhold gave up five earned runs and struck out nine with four walks in seven innings as the winning Cardinal pitcher. Carlee Hamilton did the big damage for Central Decatur with the bat by finishing 3-for-4 with a double, home run and five RBis.
