PERRY - The Nevada baseball received great pitching from Brock Dutton and a balanced hitting attack in a 5-2 victory at Perry Friday.

Dutton struck out 11 batters with no walks and held Perry to two unearned runs on five hits to help Nevada improve to 6-20 on the season.

Nevada took control early, leading 3-0 after three innings. After Perry scored in the fourth, the Cubs plated two runs in the top of the fifth and coasted the rest of the way.

Dutton was backed by an offense that saw eight different players pick up a hit. Thomas Crawford was 2-for-4 with two runs and steals apiece, James Carsrud went 2-for-3 and Dutton and Grant Higgins both singled and drove in two runs to pace the Cubs.

Ross Uthe was 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece and Ty Dittmer and Keaton Fry both singled and scored. Connor Hines also picked up a hit for the Cubs.

Perry fell to 0-22. Avery Meister struck out four and went without a walk, going all seven innings as the losing pitcher, and Conner Kenyon doubled and drove in a run at the plate for the Bluejays.

NEVADA - Nevada was hurt by a rough start in an 8-1 loss to Grinnell July 10 at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field.

Nevada gave up seven runs over the first three innings. The Cubs only mustered four hits, scoring their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall to 6-19.

Ross Uthe doubled and walked twice, James Carsrud was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Ryne Isleb stole a base and scored the Cub run. Keaton Fry and Grant Higgins each singled once and Cael Franzen drew a walk.

Max Hoffman gave up seven runs — just three earned — on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in 2 ⅔ innings as the losing pitcher. Franzen allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings.

Drew Coffman struck out eight and walked three, going all seven innings as the winning Grinnell pitcher. Colin Gibson was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Jayden Gibson 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and RBIs apiece for the Tigers.

PRAIRIE CITY - Nevada made a late comeback attempt, but couldn’t keep pace with Prairie City-Monroe in a 10-4 loss to the Mustangs July 9.

The Cubs fell behind 4-0 after three innings. They scored four runs in the final four frames, but PCM countered with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away.

The loss put Nevada at 6-18. The Cubs finished 2-12 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Ty Dittmer was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs and Keaton Fry went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Nevada on offense. Brock Dutton singled, walked and drove in a run; Colin Memmer singled and scored and Thomas Crawford walked twice.

Dutton was the losing pitcher, surrendering four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in three innings. Carter Franzen gave up six runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in three innings.

Derek Brown struck out nine and walked four in 6 ⅔ innings as the winning PCM pitcher. Preston Van Wyk tripled twice and scored three runs and Olin Meinders, Dane Owens and Brayton Van Dyke each drove in two runs for the Mustangs.

TAMA - Great pitching couldn’t overcome a lack of punch at the plate for Nevada in a 3-0 loss at South Tama July 8.

Cub pitcher Dylan Sporrer held South Tama to two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks, going all six innings in a losing effort. Nevada was only able to muster five hits offensively, falling to 5-18 on the season.

Keaton Fry was 2-for-3 with a double for Nevada with the bat. Thomas Crawford, James Carsrud and Cael Franzen each singled once.

Cam Klostermann struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter, going the distance to get the win for South Tama. Matt Weise and Cael Kellogg were both 2-for-3 with an RBI and Carter Kriegel tripled and drove in a run for the Trojans.
