MOUNT VERNON - The Nevada softball team couldn’t work around a rough third inning in an 11-2 loss to Mount Vernon during the Class 3A regional quarterfinals.
The third inning was the turning point of the game. The score was tied at 2-2 going into the third after both teams scored twice in the first inning.
Mount Vernon exploded for nine runs in its half of the third. Nevada had no answers after that, finishing the season with a 7-21 record.
Nevada recorded five hits in the loss.
Addi Vorm and Sydney Mosinski were both 2-for-3 and Vorm also scored once. Emma Griffin went 1-for-3 and drove in both Cub runs and Ellie Gray walked and scored.
Samantha Herridge took the loss after giving up six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 2 ⅓ innings. Makayla Spaid allowed two earned runs on three hits in 1 ⅔ innings and Brooke Jensen tossed two scoreless, giving up one hit and striking out one with one walk.
Amanda Roe allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings as the winning Mustang pitcher. Sammy Moss went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI to help Mount Vernon improve its record to 25-11.
