NEVADA - Nevada had a tough time getting the bat on the ball against South Hamilton’s Taylor Volkmann in an 8-0 loss to the Hawks Monday in Nevada.

Volkmann struck out 14 batters and limited the Cubs to just one hit. The loss put Nevada at 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“Our approach early wasn’t very good,” Nevada head coach John Bass said. “As the game went on we did a better job with our approach at the plate, but yeah, (Volkmann) was really working us pretty good tonight. That’s as good as we’ve seen all year.”

Nevada did have a couple of scoring chances against Volkmann.

In the bottom of the third inning Madison McGaffin drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed over to second by Makayla Spaid before being left stranded. In the fourth inning Riley Mailey reached on an error and Emma Griffin drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second, but Volkmann then recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

The Cubs’ only hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sydney Mosinski singled up the middle to leadoff the inning. Ellie Gray just missed getting a hit to lead off the sixth inning, hitting a blooper that was caught by a diving Lily Skartvedt in center field.

“When we continue struggling at the plate that puts a lot of pressure on our defense and on Makayla to make absolutely perfect pitches all night long,” Bass said. “Our approach at the plate is better this year and our on-base percentage is a little bit better, we’re just not getting timely hits. We’re kind of in a little funk and we’ve got to break out of it somehow. ”

Spaid finished with three walks and two strikeouts going all seven innings. South Hamilton finished with 10 hits.

The Hawks scored three times in the second inning on RBI hits from Skartvedt and Leah Jacoby. They added five runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run triple from Jessie Harms, two-run single by Krista Swenson and RBI double from Hailey Diersen.

The victory put South Hamilton at 14-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference
