NEVADA - The first half was fine, but the second half was much better for the Nevada girls’ soccer team in a 10-0 victory over Prairie City-Monroe April 9 at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.

Nevada, ranked fifth in Class 1A, took a 5-0 lead at the half against an overmatched foe. But with a big game against Ames on the horizon, the Cubs weren’t satisfied with the pace of play against the Mustangs.

“We talked a little bit at halftime about trying to have a little more quickness in what we were doing,” Nevada head girls’ soccer coach Randy Davis said. “Still under control, but a little higher tempo.”

So when play resumed, Nevada turned it up a notch. The result was four goals in the first 10 minutes to slam the door on PCM.

“I think that as the game went on our energy went up,” Nevada’s Kayla Dunson said.

Freshman Mayzi Weig netted Nevada’s first goal of the second half. Dunson struck 30 seconds later with her second goal of the game and J.J. Williamson scored off a penalty kick seven minutes into the half.

Addi Vorm drilled one into the net at the 49:32 mark to cap off the hot spurt.

Weig ended up with three goals. It was the first varsity hat-trick of her career.

“It feels great, honestly,” Weig said. “I just put shots in. I had a lot of good passes to me where I can get an open shot toward the goal.”

Vorm joined Dunson in scoring two goals on the night. Meredith Harter put one in the first half and Mikayla Long scored Nevada’s final goal on a nice cross shot at the 62:22 mark, ending the game early on account of the 10-goal mercy rule.

Davis said his team has gotten a lot better at moving the ball around and finding open teammates since a season-opening loss at Bondurant-Farrar.

“We’re finally making some connections,” Davis said. “If we continue to make our passing better, that’s going to make our game easier.”

But he added that there is still some work to do.

“We’re a long ways from where we want to be,” Davis said. “

The victory put Nevada at 3-1 on the season. PCM fell to 0-2.
