COLO - A flat start doomed the Colo-NESCO boys’ basketball team in a 52-24 loss to Baxter, closing out the regular season Saturday at Colo.


The Royals were held scoreless in the first quarter. Baxter jumped out to a 22-0 lead going into the second quarter.


Colo-NESCO regrouped to outscore Baxter 13-8 in the second. But the Royals were still down 17 at the break, and Baxter went on another big run in the third quarter, outscoring Colo-NESCO 17-4 to pull away.


Colo-NESCO fell to 2-18 and finished 2-10 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Royals were held to 25-percent shooting and just five free-throw attempts.


The Royals finished the game with 25 rebounds. They also had three steals and one block defensively.


Jack McKinney accounted for half of Colo-NESCO’s scoring, finishing with 12 points, three rebounds and assist and a block. Ryan Wonders delivered six points and four rebounds; Keaton Schultz three points; Trevor Burg two points, seven rebounds, one assist and a steal and Francis Bower one point and four rebounds.


Kelly Gray also dished out five assists and came up with two steals for Colo-NESCO.


Will Clapper and Cole Damman each scored 15 points to help Baxter improve to 9-10 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Carter Nelsen chipped in 14 points for the Bolts.

JANESVILLE - Colo-NESCO struggled early on defense in a 67-29 loss to a strong Janesville team Friday at Janesville.


The Royals gave up over 20 points in each of the first two quarters. By halftime, they were down by an insurmountable 46-19 margin.


Colo-NESCO had 23 rebounds and also came up with seven steals on defense. The Royals only made 1 of 7 free throws and 2 of 9 3-pointers.


Francis Bower produced 10 points, four rebounds and two assists and Tanner Ingle tallied four points and rebounds apiece for Colo-NESCO. Ryan Wonders had two points and six boards; Kelly Gray three points, rebounds, assists and steals apiece and Trevor Burg three points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist.


Keaton Schultz also netted three points and Jack McKinney added two points, three rebounds and three assists for the Royals.
