WEBSTER CITY - The Nevada wrestling team had four wrestlers pick up a victory at the Class 2A sectional meet in Webster City Saturday.
Nevada placed sixth as a team with 85 points. Jay Calentine (170 pounds), Holden Fry (220), Cale Dumbaugh (132) and Sam Steele (138) were the four Cub wrestlers to earn a victory.
Nevada head wrestling coach Lonnie Ferguson said he was happy with some individual performances. But he added that the Cub program has a lot of growing to do in order to be competitive next season.
“We need to work a lot harder in the offseason and we need to get a lot stronger,” Ferguson said. “We did have some positives. The younger guys need to keep working hard in the offseason and improve a lot more. We need to be in the finals, not trying to get a consolation wrestleback. Hopefully we can change that in the offseason.”
Calentine (12-11) placed third for the Cubs. He lost by fall to Gilbert’s Aiden Carr, but came back to pin Webster City’s Cole Bingham in 54 seconds in the third-place match, earning a wrestleback opportunity. In the wrestleback match, Calentine lost by fall to West Marshall’s Cael Kline.
Fry also took third. He lost by fall to Webster City’s Gage Rossing in the semifinals, then pinned West Marshall’s Emmett Edler in 46 seconds during the consolation round to finish the season at 13-16.
Dumbaugh finished fourth at 132, completing his senior campaign with an 8-12 record. He won by fall over West Marshall’s Tanner Beals in 2:51 during the quarterfinals, then lost by fall to Perry’s Jacob Nelson in the semifinals and Webster City’s Brady Auderer in the third-place match.
Steele’s win came in the consolation round when he stuck Gilbert’s Aiden Gibbons in 1:44. Steele lost by fall to Webster City’s Nick Gasca during the quarterfinals in his only other match, placing fifth and finishing the season with four victories.
Gilbert won the team championship with 224 points. Webster City took second with a score of 208.
Final team scores: 1. Gilbert 224 points, 2. Webster City 208, 3. Perry 180.5, 4. Roland-Story 131, 5. West Marshall 117, 6. Nevada 85.
