With the high school wrestling season drawing closer and closer, the Iowa High School Athletic Association deemed it time to release the initial 2018 high school wrestling team and individual rankings.

Officially released on Tuesday, November 20, the initial class rankings offer the first real inside look of what may be to come in the 2018-19 Iowa High School wrestling campaign. Within the initial rankings lies a litany of area high school wrestlers who are bound and determined to prove their rankings.

Starting in Class 3A, the Waukee Warriors crack the top ten team rankings as the fourth ranked team. The Warriors are coming off of their best ever dual meet finish in team history after placing second a year prior. Waukee also did some damage on the individual side of things with ten state meet qualifiers. Six individual Warriors have found their way into the initial rankings including sophomore Connor Kelley in the 106 pound weight class, sophomore Thurman Christensen in the 113 pound weight class, senior Nick Miller in the 120 pound weight class, junior Cody Anderson in the 138 pound weight class, senior Mason Seifried in the 152 pound weight class, and Anthony Zach in the 170 pound weight class.

Kelly rests at ninth in the 106 pound weight class while Miller and Anderson rank second in the 120 and 138 pound weight classes respectively. Christensen ranks seventh in the 113 pound weight class followed by Seifried ranking seventh at 152 pounds and Zach ranking second at 170 pounds.

Dallas Center-Grimes also has strong representation inside the initial rankings with returning state qualifiers in Luke Fistler and Zach Needham. Fistler, comes in as the sixth ranked individual wrestler in Class 3A at the 152 pound weight class. Needham enters the initial rankings as the second best Class 3A wrestler at the 182 pound weight class.

Despite not entering the team rankings, both ADM and the joint venture of Van Meter/Earlham enter three individuals each into the initial Class 2A individual rankings.

For Van Meter/Earlham, Colby Wiederholt starts things off in the 126 pound weight class ranked 7th while fellow junior Caleb Swalla ranks eighth in the 160 pound weight class. The third member of the Van Meter/Earlham team to enter the rankings is none other than junior Derrin Sesker who ranks eighth as well but in the 285 pound weight class with which he went to state last season.

For the wrestling Tigers of ADM, their three individuals in the top rankings are oh so familiar faces. Each of the past two seasons have witnessed the likes of Andrew Flora and Nolan Harsh grace the state meet stage. With the initial rankings, the reigning 113 pound Class 2A champion Flora, enters the 2018 season ranked first in the 126 pound weight class. Harsh, after coming so close to greatness a year ago, ranks sixth in the 182 pound weight class, the fourth different weight class the senior has wrestled in his career. The third ranked member for the Tigers includes first team All-State football honoree Kaden Sutton. After his first time gracing the state meet stage last season, Sutton enters 2018 ranked sixth in the 285 pound weight class.
