STORY CITY — The turnover bug hampered another record passing night for the Nevada football team in a 49-34 loss to Roland-Story Friday at Story City.

Kody Kruschwitz broke his own school mark for passing yards in a game with 391 on a record 37 completions in 56 attempts. Andrew Saunders was absolutely sensational at receiver, setting the school single game mark for receptions and yards with an amazing 21 catches for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

As a team, Nevada racked up an impressive 542 yards. But in the end, the Cubs couldn’t shake an uncharacteristic eight turnovers, finishing 3-6 on the season and 1-4 in Class 2A District 7.

“We were able to move the ball well throughout the game,” Nevada head football coach Andrew Kleeman said. “We had 542 yards of total offense in the game, which is the most we’ve had all season, but it’s difficult to overcome eight turnovers. They were able to capture some momentum right before the half, which changed the flow of the game.”

Roland-Story scored 28 unanswered points to go up 35-21 early in the fourth quarter.

Drake Day had touchdown runs from 10 and 47 yards and found Sam Diehl on a 33-yard touchdown pass and Ben Chelsvig scored his second short scoring run of the game, going in from two yards out five seconds into the fourth quarter to cap the big spurt.

Nevada came back with a 5-yard Sam Abraham touchdown run to pull within 35-28. Chelsvig added another 2-yard scoring run to put the Norsemen back up by two touchdowns, but the Cubs again responded when Kruschwitz found Saunders from 27 yards out with 3:43 remaining in the fourth.

The Cubs needed a big stop to have a chance to tie or go ahead late, but Roland-Story scored one more touchdown less than a minute after Saunders’ score to ice the game. Day scored the clinching touchdown on a 15-yard run with 2:49 remaining.

“Our kids did battle back,” Kleeman said. “We gave ourselves a chance in the fourth and we were confident we could tie the game midway through the quarter. That’s kind of how our season went overall. There were flashes of outstanding football, but we weren’t as consistent as we needed to be to close out games against quality opponents.”

Nevada ended up fumbling the ball away five times and Kruschwitz was also intercepted three times.

The Roland-Story game completed a remarkable run by Kruschwitz and Saunders in 2018.

Kruschwitz set the Nevada record for passing yards (2,247) and touchdowns (20) in a season. Saunders became the school’s all-time receiving leader in just one season of work, catching 80 passes for 982 yards and nine touchdowns this fall.

Abraham was also a big weapon for Nevada all season, and on Friday he caught three passes for 47 yards and added 29 yards rushing. Joven Nelson stepped up with 45 yards rushing and 44 receiving against Roland-Story, Brayden Bottorf made nine grabs for 59 yards, Caden Jones ran for 42 yards and Kruschwitz tacked on 32 yards rushing to finish with 423 yards of total offense.

On defense, Noah Adelmund had six tackles and a sack, Anthony Ellis seven tackles, Nelson six tackles and Lucas Rogers and Keaton Fry five stops apiece. Ayden Rhodes chipped in four tackles and an interception.

“I am extremely proud of our team and their effort all season,” Kleeman said. “We wish our record was different, but our kids learned a lot about facing adversity this season.”

Roland-Story finished 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the district.

Day threw for 139 yards, ran for 103 and totaled four touchdowns for Roland-Story versus Nevada. Chelsvig finished 186 yards and three touchdowns rushing, Nathan Bell made 16.5 tackles and a fumble recovery and Colby Gray recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass for the Norsemen.
